Which Tackle (s) can slide into Guard?

Pretty apparent we need some help inside next year. We’ve recruited pretty well at the Tackle position in recent years and it would be nice to move someone inside.

Who out of our current tackles would be best suited at guard?

I don't think you touch Whirfs or Jackson - I thought I read Linderbaum was moving to OL?

Linderbaum is going to Center, so hopefully he can help. Mark K has to be one of our 5 best linemen next year so would be nice to get him on the field.

I read elsewhere that Jackson could be a potential fit at guard because he’s more of a big mauler run blocker like Sherff. I’m not sure if that’s realistic given that he’s 6’7. There was some discussion about Mark K moving in this year but I believe BF said he didn’t want to this year, but it might make sense next year if he wants to get on the field.

Point being we have quite a few options at tackle and not as many on the interior.

oh yeah, Center - my bad. I just would hate to move TW and AJ - I feel like that interrupts what they've been working to build.

That’s fair from a continuity standpoint. Pass protection was good overall but we run a lot of quick passing and it helps when you have a QB who is tough to tackle so the numbers probably look better than what we saw at times.

On paper this Oline would look pretty good.

LT- Alaric Jackson
LG- Mark Kallenberger
C- Tyler Linderbaum
RG- Cole Barnwart
RT- Tristan Wirfs

How big is Linderbaum now? Saw him play in high school several times. Not very big, we have never had big centers during the Ferentz years or ever really, but the kid is tough and talented.

are the Paulsen twins ever gonna stick somewhere and make a bigger impact? They are seniors next year right?

Hard to say. He’s listed at 260 on the Iowa roster but who knows where he’s at now or where he could be by the start of next season.

The fact that we moved him to center makes me think the coaches feel he can be a really good one there. It might not be next year though as I’m sure he has a lot to learn.

I was just going to bring them up.. One of them will be in the mix for sure if not both. It probably depends on Kallenbergers development to an extent. They both played some this year off and on too. We did a lot of shuffling with the guards this year

They’ll be seniors and based on what we’ve seen thus far I would hope we have other options. Seems like they love being hawks and are great locker room guys. Serviceable backups at this point but maybe they can improve mightily.

I don't see either tackle getting moved inside... They need to get better at run blocking. Both of them but as far as pass pro goes man did they both do pretty darn well at that this year. No need to go rocking the boat breaking someone new in

Should not be playing any guy on the line less than 295 and a butt smaller than mine. Gone are the days Iowas 275 lb linemen can move people.

I would agree except at the center position as I think you can get away with 280 or so there.

Here are few names that will get looked at;
Jake Newborg
Austin Schulte
Cody Ince
Jeff Jenkins
Matt Fagan
Jack Plumb
Coy Kirkpatrick
Brian Sadler
Kyler Schott
Kyle Sorenson
Tyler Endres
Exra Miller
Justin Britt
Noah Fenske
Luke Empen

And this isnt even mentioning our returning starters, backups, and potential contrbutors. Wirfs, Jackson, Banwart, Linderbaum, Kallenberger, La. Paulsen and Lev.Paulsen. We have plenty of bodies, its just a matter of which ones take the next step up in development. We will be very, very young on the interior next year. Im confident we will put a decent lineup in next year, Im just worried about the inexperience we will have in the backups.

No way do you move tackles and start over. Aside from center they're by far the more technical and physical position. In a pro style offense I'd argue that your left tackle is the 2nd most important offensive guy on the field, especially with edge rushing getting more and more frequent all the time.

Flip the tables...

Would you want brand new meat trying to stop AJ Epenesa on the blind side?

Newborg left.

That's disappointing, they were highly rated coming out of high school.

I didn’t necessarily mean the starters. Could be Mark K as well. Just think we have a lot of Tackle depth and could use some help inside.

Our interior OL wasn't bad this year, they just didn't get a lot of help from their backs.

Reynolds was pretty good, he has a good shot at getting drafted. Levi Paulsen has played about as much as Reynolds did going into his senior year.

Render was also good and will leave a pretty big hole to be filled. Hopefully Linderbaum/Banwart can take care of business.

I have long thought Jackson could kick down because of how he mauls in the run game. Wirfs could handle LT just fine, and he is probably a superior pass blocker to AJ. The question then becomes can Kallenberger (or whoever is next in line) be close enough to AJ as a right tackle to make it worth the upgrade at OG? Probably not worth the risk of moving AJ, but I think it is intriguing.

I think showing some positional flexibility would actually help AJ from a draft standpoint as well, and as we have seen recently, teams are beginning to invest more in interior OL than they used to (you are still WAY better off being an OT than an OG, but the difference is not as big as it used to be).
