Which Freshmen get starts in 2010?

I think Kirk is more open to this now and we have a good class, so any thoughts? I think Donnal is starting by the end of the year and will be first team all freshman. Other then that I dont' know, C.J. will if there is an injury and maybe even if there is not. He is the player I am most excited for. Big CJ catching high passes in the back of the endzone.

Look for James Morris, from Solon, IA to be on the field EARLY and OFTEN.

Some, here, have underestimated Iowa H.S. football, especially if the player is coming from a 2A or 3A school, as James does at Solon. (Brandon Wegher was projected to be a Safety, by some ) However, James was voted the Gatorade Football Player of the Year twice.

I cannot think of ANY other HS football player to have that honor twice.

James Morris may be in the Mix, from the get-go. Watch for that development in 2010, my Hawkeye friends. :)

A.J. Derby will see some playing time next year! I think you will see him line up at different positions throughout the year. He might play some LB, or some WR. He will see the field for sure. Also Sentreal Henderson will see the field as well;) Okay I can dream can't I, hopefully the kid makes the right choice and chooses the Hawks!

Shumpert, Davis, CJ, Lowery and Coker make the most sense to me. We're thin at S and CB so Shumpert and Lowery could break in there. Obviously we can always find a place for a stud TE in the passing game and CJ fits the bill there. As for Davis and Coker, we could use some depth at DT so if Davis qualifies I could see him getting time. Coker on the other hand may just be too good to keep off the field even with our depth at RB. He seems to bring a different style then we have now.

I don't really see Derby getting on the field because I think the staff will really give him a chance at QB for at least the first year just to see if he can develop. Morris may be to good to keep off the field but we're pretty deep at LB. I like what I've seen from Tarp, Johnson, Davis, and some of the other LB's waiting in the wings. I don't think he'll crack the 2 deep on defense but perhaps he plays on special teams. The same goes for Donnal I don't think we'll need him. If we do, then it means some of our other linemen have either been injured or not developed the way we wanted. I'd like to see Donnal hit the weights for a year before getting into action. We've got enough solid underclassmen that should be able to handle the OL this year.

I really don't expect ANY TR FR to see starts. The closest thing to starts is being a situational starter in particular packages. To that end, CJ Fiedorowicz has a great shot to see plenty of early action in 2 and 3 TE sets.

On the OL, I'd probably look for RS FR like MacMillan and Van Sloten to push for starting spots before Donnal does. I don't mean that as any knock on Donnal either ... it's just that MacMillan and Van Sloten already have a year in the system under their belts AND they have more time working with Doyle under their belts too.

Lastly, with regard to working in guys into the rotation, I really expect Morris and at least one TR FR on the DL to be able to make some noise. I don't expect them to start, but I expect them to gain enough experience so that they'll be ready to start in 2011.

You guys do realize that in 90% of situations, starting a frehman is usually a bad thing.

This is very true 90% of the time. Yet we are talking about an experienced team, and if say Morris gets time at LB, over guys that have been in the program for several years, it will mean Morris is a STUD, not that the others aren't good.

So while normally this is true, I think this is why people are excited, because in Iowa's case this year it will be because the FR is a good one.
