Where would you rate Aaron White?

Another excellent thread containing a link to an article stating that Aaron is only 10 rebounds away from joining Acie Earl and Greg Stokes as the only Hawks to be top ten all time in scoring and rebounds got me to thinking about this...

As we all know he recently passed another bona fide Hawkeye legend (Roy Marble) in the free throw category. Another poster in the aformentioned thread also pointed out that he's only a few blocked shots away from top ten all time for that stat.

So... in a program that has included the likes of John Johnson, Kevin Kuhnert, Don Nelson, Ronnie Lester, BJ Armstrong, Kevin Gamble and many others where do you rate Whitey?

Top ???

Top 50ish probably. His stats are a little higher than they should be because of so much playing time his freshman year due to playing on a bad team. Top 50 all time is still pretty damn good though.

That's a great question. As we all know, Aaron is very good at running the floor and getting to the free throw line. He isn't a complete offensive player though and therefore probably isn't at the top of the list like his stats may argue he should be. I'm not gonna put a numerical ranking on him, I'm not near old enough to compare him to some of the greats. I'll let my objective elders post their input.

Aaron has played at a time in our program that suited him well. As far as skill set, many players will rank higher than Aaron, maybe not stat wise. Aaron will not play a the next level, in my opinion. He is not strong defensively, is not that competitive, is limited offensively, and really has not improved his overall game that much.

What do you mean by next level? I think he will earn a very nice living playing over seas. I agree that the NBA is likely out of reach but that's not the only way to advance one's basketball career.

Great Hawkeye, but he really benefited getting an early opportunity to play as freshman due the horrendous lack of talent that Fran had to work with when he got here. White has made the most of his talent and plays as hard as anyone.

I wouldn't say Aaron is one of the all time greats but I'd put him top 30-40. His determination and perseverance are to be admired and it's the reason his career stats put him among the greats.

Unfortunately gathering stats doesn't always reflect your basketball individual greatness for some. His game has been limited and I wouldn't put him in the same category as the greats. Reminds me in many ways of the great Nuggets-ABA/76's-NBA Bobby Jones. A legendary role player, cog in the wheel. Not a great shooter but a phenom rebounder, free throw shooter and passer that ran the floor like a deer.

Gotta agree with everyone, here. Very good player. Glad he's a Hawk. I find myself shocked every time I hear he's surpassed or approaching another stat milestone because he's done it so quietly.

That's what sort of gnaws at me ... how quiet he can get, as in, he still has stretches within games and stretches of games where he goes m.i.a and is one of the first to hang his head and drift.

It's weird. I love watching him play, feel he is an impact player, yet he leaves me thinking he could do so much more if he gave full effort to assert his game rather than sometimes waiting for the game to come to him.

Prolly around 40-45'ish, which is pretty damned good. I can't think of too many former players who have reached their full potential like he has. Plus he's a quality person.

Glad he is a Hawk.

He'd be a bona fide starter for many years if there was a WNBA, but that'll never happen 'cause it'd probably be considered racist.

I really wish that he would do more of what he did at the end of today's game.

He got a smaller guy on him and took him to the block twice. Got fouled once , second time easy bucket.

IMO that was always the area he needed to expand into to round out his game.

where would I rate him? I dunno because that's a tough question. I'd place him in the ryan bowen/greg brunner range. They were all 4's (PF's for us old guys) and they were "iowa" type players: tough, hardnosed, play hard, etc. Bowen and Bru did some things better than White does and vice versa but wherever you have those guys, I'd put White in that area. If white had a 15-18 foot jump shot or some post moves he'd be ranked above them IMO.
