Where are the DL's?

Iowa is losing three quality DL's with little evidence of solid backups. Yet, I do not see any new recruits for DT. Are we going going to slide DE's over, or did we just lose out?

We lost out. Life as we know it is going to come to an end... :p

Anyway, we lost Clayborn, Klug and Ballard. We still have Binns, Daniels and Daniel as juniors (now seniors, right?). We also have quite a number of DL who were freshmen last year (4 true, 2 RS), along with 2 sophomore DL. Not sure about skill, but depth is there, no? However, whether they're DEs or DTs, I don't know about that.

Well, John Raymon and Riley McMinn are DE commits, and Cooper is a recruit at DT that everyone is hoping commits tomorrow. Like the above post said we still have some depth again not sure on all positions:
Daniel (SR) DE
Binns (SR) DE
Daniels (SR) DT
Donovan Johnson (RS FR)
Alvis (So)
Nardo (SR) DT I think
Pasat (RS FR)
Carl Davis (RS FR) DT
Mike Hardy (RS FR)
Forgy (SR)
Marty Hopkins (SO)
Scot Covert (SO)

That's 12 D linemen not including this class for next year. What do you want man?!

Iowa typically doesn't recruit or sign many DT's.
I've read before they look for guys that are undersized but have a body frame that can grow.

PLEASE STOP! How many times do I have to type this?!

Here are the DT recruits at Iowa since 2002

Larry Thomas
Wesley Thibeaux
Richard Kitrell
George Eshareturi
Alex Wilcox
Nyere Aumaitre
Vernon Jackson
Ryan Bain
Justin Collins
Alex Kanellis
Cody Hundertmark
Casey McMillan
Carl Davis
Donovan Johnson
Anthony Ferguson

Notice anything? Yep. Not one of these guys ever made any impact on the field for Iowa! DT is a totally overrated position to recruit. Iowa does much better with more athletic players converted from other positions.

Ballard, Klug, Kroul, King, Babbs, Daniels... Need I go on?

My question is IF we lose out on Cooper who is the next in line there?
Cyrus is a guy Iowa could certainly use and mold into the next NFL draft pick but we can live without him if we have to. The Iowa staff seems to want at last one DT in this class, which makes sense with our losses there. But I have not seen anything on anyoe other than Cooper to fill that spot.

And as I've said to each of your posts, not all of the DT's were DTs on Scout and rivals but that was the intentions the KF and crew had for them. If you think all those DT we had were brought in to play LB your just dumb. And if you realize that if injury hadn't ended a few careers and Bain wasn't dumb they would've contributed. You also listed some RS Fr, who could be monsters if what we've heard about Johnson and Davis are true. Just calm down, we know we haven't been able to get those guys, but it's not for lack of trying.

I think they're holding out for Cooper in this class. If they don't get him they will try for a few in the next class. Look at the above names. There are some young guys that should be pretty good. I'm not too worried about it. And Cyrus is an OT, hopefully we can get some talent there next year, but for now we have some good young talent on the OL too.

Actually, your claim is a little suspect, because none of the guys I listed who have played DT at Iowa since 2002 were recruited to specifically play DT.

They came into the program at other positions, got into the strength program and the coaches realized that they could contribute at DT. Now, did they think that it might be the case that these guys could end up at DT? Could definitely be, but we do not know that. Also, there are only 2 LB in the group, King and Kroul, and I remember when they both got to campus. They both thought they were going to be linebackers.

But, that doesn't change my point. My point is that guys that Scout lists at DT's have not ended up being contributors at Iowa and Iowa has done just fine.

The coaches also could have offers out there to players that we don't know about. Case in point, Mr. Lowdermilk.

You aren't getting my point, just because scout called them a LB or DE or TE doesn't mean that is what Iowa told them they were going to play. Campbell is listed as a RB, but we all know he is coming to Iowa to play corner. I'm not saying King and Kroul were targeted, but if you think some of those guys aren't told they'll be a DL then you're foolish. Also, just because it says DE doesn't mean they can't play DT. I get your point, but you must understand mine as well.

It's the same thing as saying all our 5 stars never pan out when some do and some don't and 2 stars are just as good, when many of those fail, and some pan out. You can't make that conclusion from the data, or you shouldn't anyway.

I think the Raymon kid(6'5" 245) from Pa. could be moved to DT if they felt they needed him too after a redshirt kid. Would kind of be like a Ballard type I think from watching the film. Maybe he ends up at OT or DE but he could be a big athletic DT like Ballard. The kid was chasing people 20 yards downfield for tackles and they lined him up in the backfield for the QB and he had a lot of pancakes on his highlights on utube.

Iowa has had only a couple of five stars since KF became coach. They have recruited 15 guys listed at DT. Also some 2 stars have panned out and some haven't.

No guy listed as a DT on scout has panned out. Dude, you can keep making the same point, but you cannot win.

Unless you can somehow show that one of these 15 had made an impact, you need to let it go. I am not arguing anything other than the fact that guys Iowa has signed who have been listed at DT on Scout have not panned out. Before you get confused, let me tell you what I haven't claimed.

1) Iowa has not planned for a player listed at another position to play DT.
2) Iowa has not had successful DT's
3) Some Players have not got hurt
4) DE's can't play DT

My initial response is just to calm people who are freaking out that Iowa had no DT's signed in this class.
