When do you think Barta starts contacting coaches?

I was thinking about the timing of when Barta will start contacting coaches, and who he will contact first, etc, and what worries me is this:

What if teams like Tennessee and Baylor make it to the 2nd weekend, and Barta waits until those teams are done playing so he can try and offer those guys (Pearl, Drew, Forbes, etc.) the job, and what IF they turn it down? It doesn't sound like Forbes would turn down the job from the rumors we've heard, but still.. And what if, in the meantime, coaches who are already done get snagged by someone else? Guys like Tony Barbee, Buzz Williams, etc? Seems to me like we've hosed ourselves if that happens.

I guess we'll see what happens in the tournament this weekend, but will Barta wait around for Baylor, Tennessee, Pitt, etc. to lose before contacting someone? Maybe we need to root for these teams to go down in the 2nd round?

What do you guys think Barta will do?

Tough decisions for Barta to make, that's for sure. I don't envy his job at all.

Unless they get offers they can't refuse... they'll wait to see what's on the table before they take on new jobs. IMO

Barta won't contact anyone. The search firm will do the leg work. They will make a contact to see if there is an interest. Then Gary will work from a list of those interested names and decide who he wants to speak to. I doubt that happens before Monday, but that is just speculation on my end.

Search firms talk with agents. Agents look out for their clients. Agents will leverage a potential Iowa offer for more money elsewhere. This is happening right now. But, everyone knows this is the game, so you won't hear much about it because neither school wants it in the press or on the message boards.

Personally, I don't like the "firm" hire again. It didn't do wonders for us last time... Iowa isn't your typical job. Our state population is the size of many major cities. We're an odd duck. The crew doing the hiring should consist of former players and those close to the program. The Captain was a unique fit. So was Davis. The popular vote isn't always right. I won't be upset if we get a name from left field and bball alumns have his back.

The "firm" doesn't hire anybody. The firm makes a list of potential fits and reaches out to them to gauge interest. It's up to Barta to actually make an offer and make the hire.

They do this for two reasons. First it avoids the negatives that are attached when someone turns down a job. When the firm contacts Bruce Pearls people and they say no thanks they won't actually be rejecting an overature from the school.

Second they do this to circumvent freedom if information act stuff. They are a private entity and as such not subject to those laws.

But make no mistake about it the actual hire iteself is 100% up to the U.
