What's Wrong with Iowa Basketball? We Examine

Good article/evaluation. I think defensive rebounding is also better in a man to man defense. Each player knows which guy he's supposed to keep off the glass.

Exactly. It would stop the alarming trend of the opponent having more offensive rebounds than we do. We cut out those extra possessions and we will get back to winning.

I agree. And is it really less tiring to play a zone? If the opponent gets 2 offensive rebounds and we have to defend for somewhere between 75 and 90 seconds (in a zone) is that less tiring than playing 25 to 30 seconds of good man to man?

I could somewhat understand the zone with Indiana because I think the fear was stopping Yogi's penetration but other than that, it seemed odd.

And I think Rob's spot on about the help we need scoring. Against Indiana it was the bench that was a flop. Against Penn State they played well but Mike, AC and Woody didn't do anything.

Jok and Uthoff are going to get there's. It's just a matter of getting a little bit from everybody else and we probably need at least one or possibly two other guys in double figures on a nightly basis. Some nights that might be Mike, some nights it's Woody or Anthony or even Uhl but none of these guys have stepped up in the past 3 games.

And Uhl hasn't even attempted a 3 point shot in the last 3 games. That can't happen when he's shooting in the neighborhood of 50%.

I'm no basketball scholar ... but I always thought teams played zone when playing against more athletic/better conditioned players.

Given Iowa gives so many guys minutes, you would think they could run a good man defense for most games.

I blame that in Fran. I heard from some talking had about four games ago that Fran told Uhl he needed to drive more and finish at the rim and shot less from the arc.

I heard the same thing. But I think driving more and finishing at the rim doesn't mean never take a 3 point shot. And Uhl has taken at least half a dozen pull up jumpers over the last 3 or 4 games. I hate that shot from him. I would much rather he take the 3 point shot. If he's trying to drive and they take away his lane then kick the ball back out rather than take a mid range jump shot that isn't part of his game right now...IMO.

Side Note - Fran's players get better from season to season. I suspect Uhl will dunk more next year; shoot at least 70% from the line; and make the occasional mid range jump shot. Combine this improvement with an increased role and I can see him averaging 13 or 14 points a game.

I just don't buy logging minutes and continuing to stay in a zone that for 2 straight games now gets picked up front leading to wide open 3's play ball for FREAKING SAKES.

I think the scouting report plays a part here too. Uhl is another guy that doesn't have the prettiest of shots so teams let him shoot early on and credit to Dom for proving himself so teams are respecting that part of his game now.

Good write-up, RH.

Most everything is determined by the flow of each game. One game could play more zone than man. More pressure one game than the next.

Free Throws are the constant measure from game to game. That's this team's krpytonite. It's not the weakness every game but when the iron lid is lifted off, bad FT% means an L at PSU and probably the L at Indy.
