What's Missing

A lot is being made about what Iowa lacks. People bring up the older days with BJ, Marble, Horton and Gamble, but there is one player people have forgotten about. Kent Hill, when the Iowa wrestling team thought they could beat anyone, they couldn't beat Hill and Horton. Why do I bring up Kent Hill, he was tough and played hard, not the most talented, but he did a lot for Iowa.
Iowa needs a tough SOB that will contest shots and put someone on the ground and earn their points at the line, maybe Olaseni can gain 20 lbs and become a taller version of Hill.
I don't know that Iowa will ever defend the 3-pt shot, I mean ever...but they need more guys on the roster like Hill that defend, rebound, contest and make it tough to score on the inside. Horton was a great player, but he had a great running mate as well.
Hopefully, Meyer will be a hard nosed kid as well, reading about him he seems to fit that bill as well.
Until Iowa becomes mentally tough down low, they will continue to give up second, third and fourth looks to inferior teams. Make teams jump shooters and work for looks, create traffic in the lane and giving up 40% three point shooting won't look so bad if teams can't get to line or shoot 50-60% from 2-pt FG's.

There were many great contributers to that team, any of which would help out tremendously right now.

Kevin Gamble- Greatest SG to wear the uniform-Great NBA Career
Bill (dont call me Clarence) Jones back up PG / SF solid ball player-Phenominal CBA career
Lohaus-7' PF. One of the first true big man 3 pt threats- Long NBA career
Al Lorenzen-Solid / strong PF- played with pain most of career or could have been truly special
Gerry "Sir Jamalot" Wright-The guy could sky. Left un attended could easily go off like an all american. Would have been an early round draft pick had he not made his intentions of becoming a naval office known. Still got picked in the 5th rou nd and had a great CBA career playing only home games. CBA dunk champ.
Kent Hill-See OP
Michael Reeves- very nice back up PG.
Jeff Moe- Mr Hustle could also flat out light it up when he was on and out worked about eveyone.

I would take any of them.

Wright could have been a phenom, but how many injuries did that guy have? He was still a quality player in the end. Forgot about some of the others, but I would still take Hill over any of the other bigs for the toughness factor.

That team minus BJ, Horton and Marble would contend for the BIG today, can we have those players back?

Moe was a blast to watch, does anyone remember when he said something to the effect that he was going to shave all his body hair to make himself more areodynamic?
Bill Jones was such a quality player on that team too, it is amazing how much talent was on that team when you really look at them. People do forget about just how good the "role" players were.

How the heck did Iowa not win the NC with that bunch? Well, we all know a lot of what happened to that team, but still...

Jaryd definitely was a presence under the basket, cool and composed. Could use him this year, his leadership is sorely missed....

The Hawks seem to always have problems guarding the perimeter, if I remember correctly, and also have difficulty getting an open three on the other end for some reason....

We should have won a national championship Mr. Davis's first year, Sportstalent. That might have been our last serious opportunity to do so.....

:)

Waiting for that one...duh!!!

Iowa has a roster filled with role players, but they have some talent there.

The other thing Iowa lacks, which is obvious to everyone is at least one go to player and that has probably been posted enough.

If Iowa had a toughness about them; they don't lose to Campbell and probably not Clemson.

A go-to scorer that can create off the bounce. Give this team Jordan Taylor at the PG spot, we'd be vastly improved.

The talent back then was definetly good
but Lohaus and Gamble didn't do much until they were seniors
Sir Jam alot was just that a sky walker type player not much of a outside shooter
Jeff Moe was instant energy, he came onto the court and you could just feel the crowd get excited, just like in Kinnick when Dwight went on the field
we have no such players on the floor today
but the ones that could do that are Freshmen and Sophamores
i see Oglesby being like Jeff Moe
Marble by his senior year "may" be like Gamble
and before the doubters start trashing me
Gamble did all his fantastic playing in his "SENIOR" year
next year i hope Meyer is the next Lohaus but does not wait til his senior year to show it
just like I hope Clemmon will be another Reeves and Gesell is another Oliver or better

the talent is here and coming, it takes time to develope talent, the players we have are not one and done players
we have 4 year players that will develope over that time
