Plain and simple, CONFIDENCE, not only at the player/team level but also within the coaching staff. If anything, I believe both players and coaches are over-thinking what they need to do and by thinking too much, they are diminishing their ability to perform.
For those of you that are golfers, consider this analogy. I know many years when I was playing regularly, the first time out I played quite well because I was relying on muscle memory. However, as the season progressed, I started analyzing my swing with the goal of getting better, only to screw up my rhythm and watch my game go south.
That is what I see going on with the Hawkeyes, especially the skill positions. It's not that they don't have the will to win, it's that they are trying so hard to play well that they are not allowing themselves to perform.
Back to the golf analogy, I don't care how good you are, you should expect to make a bad shot now and then. But what separates the most successful pros from the rest is the ability to put that poor shot/decision behind them and trust their ability to make the next shot. In short, I believe Iowa is questioning their ability to perform and that is something that has to be addressed by the team (both players and coaches) between games, not during the game.
I am not saying that KF couldn't be more candid with his remarks but if confidence is the missing component, he has to be careful not to say something that will cause it to decline even more. The bowl game will be a good test, to see what kind of mettle this team has, and I'm hopeful that KF will get them ready to play.
