What to Expect from Maryland?

Since we've never faced Maryland they are a bit of a mystery. They seem to have the edge on offense but the Hawks have the better defense. It should be an interesting match up and probably a close game. Maryland opened as a 2.5 pt favorite in Vegas.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE PUT A JINX ON THE MARYLAND FIELD GOAL KICKER ... HE HAS NOT MISSED THIS YEAR ... 11 for 11.

Here are some stat comparisons of the two teams and their rankings in the B1G so far ...

Scoring Defense - Iowa 5th (19.2 ppg), Maryland 11th (25.2 ppg)

My initial take after taking a look over those stats are that Maryland is comparable to Indiana; in that they have an explosive offense, but not so good in the defensive side of the ball. I think we could be far more physical than them (in fact, that's how OSU beat them).

I'm hoping we can be explosive on offense, like we were vs Indiana. Ok fact, we'll have to be to come away with another W.

They're tearing out the playing surface in college park, replacing it with paper. Because on paper Iowa will beat their ***.

I expect to see the worst uniforms in college football.

Other than that I don't know what to expect because I don't/can't watch much maryland (because of said unis). That being said, they appear to be on par with Iowa as far as talent. By that I mean switch schedules and the results would probably be similar as far as records go. I guess that's why the spread is 2 points as of right now. Should be a good game.

The one big difference with Maryland is they are not a really big running team like Indiana is. Maryland avgs less yards running than Iowa.

So again, hawk defense stops the run and really focuses on stopping Diggs and Long. Easier said and done but if the hawks can make the terps one dimensional like what happened to indiana after sudfeld went out it is in hawks favor.

The hawk offense can maybe out muscle this defense and get more running yards to really set up the big plays.

Go hawks.

Also, good to see Kidd and Koehn coming around.

If the Hawks can sort out their run defense problems from the Indiana game, I think Maryland will have a difficult time moving the ball. Iowa will be one of the toughest defenses they have faced this year, and they have an average contingent of running backs. No one elite, but all decent.

To me it comes down to big plays, if Iowa can limit these, I think they have a good chance of winning and possibly winning soundly. But, if diggs gets free for a couple or their other stud wideouts get
free I can see us getting in too big a hole.

Terps: Uses the 8th ranked offense to score the 4th most points.
Hawks: Uses the 9th ranked offense to score the 4th fewest points.

Terps: 5th ranked passing offense against Hawks 3rd ranked pass defense.
Terps: 11th ranked rush offense against Hawks 7th ranked rush defense.
Strategy: Stop the pass and make them run. Double Diggs and their other wideout and rely on the DL to stop the run. And blitz like crazy.

Hawks: 8th ranked passing offense against Terps 11th ranked pass defense.
Hawks: 10th ranked rushing offense against Terps 13th ranked rush defense.
Strategy: Iowa should (I know it won't happen) spread the terps out to prevent them from putting 8/9 men in the box. Since that isn't likely, Iowa should use tempo, draws and screens and the mid-range passing offense. This will allow the run game to work. Trying to establish the run with MW, first, won't work.

Agree, don't give him a chance to return anything and on D the safeties need to help out the corners and not let him get open deep.

Maryland's defensive stats are skewed a bit by playing games against Ohio State and West Virginia, two very good offenses. Maryland's defense did much better against Indiana than did Iowa. Iowa faced an above-average offense for the first time this year in Indiana, and the result was not pretty.

I don't think Iowa can expect to win 20-17 or some score like that. We will need to put up some points, hopefully come up with a couple of turnovers.
