What makes Weisman better?

Bullock and Canzeri are supposed to be faster... Weisman runs through big holes but, Bullock & Canzeri generally go nowhere save for 1 carry that they breakout for a few yards. What makes Weisman better? Does he just read blocks better?

I've been wondering this as well the past couple of weeks. He and Bullock have the same blockers, Bullock is faster than Weisman, but Weisman almost always seems to hit the open running lane better than Bullock does. I think it's just an innate vision thing.

I'll go with a couple things...

1) More decisive. He's not going to wiggle too many guys, so he's is going to make his decision, make his one cut and go. Crucial in a zone blocking scheme..

2) His lack of speed probably acts as more of a help than a hindrance behind and/or at the LOS. Not all guys can run behind zone blocking...it takes patience and the ability to read a block. I think Weisman reads them pretty well, is very decisive (as listed above), but because he might not have the "burst" of a Bullock or Canzeri, he isn't really "showing his hand" until the block develops (i.e. pressing the hole than making his decision) and by then he can get into the secondary.

One thing I have noticed this year...very few guys are trying to take him up high. Early in his campaign last year it seemed he had quite a few more opportunities to posterize some dbacks who came up to try to tackle him. Seems this year a lot more of them are aiming for the thighs and below! :)

He has a pretty good burst just when he needs it, on the cut into the hole. He reads zone blocking better than the other guys and thus finds the hole and gets up to / through it. And he never gets ankle tackled, tripped up the way damon does.

What 2679 said in #2 is spot on

Agreed. Weisman (just like Green used to) gets most of his yards based on the first 3 steps he takes. Decisive through the hole and make hay against the second level vs dancing while the hole collapses around you. Do the math.

He has size and strength to go along with great balance. He has his feet underneath him when he moves downfield. He doesn't get knocked off his feet by an arm tackle. He also doesn't outrun his blockers or make the wrong cutbacks.

I haven't seen enough Canzeri to make a call on him. But Bullock dances too much and seems to be looking for the homerun.
Weisman is much more patient and is better able to shed tacklers once he does hit the hole.
For my money, LeShun Daniels should be getting Bullock's carries.

All I know is that Weisman is what Hawk football is all about, hoss lineman road grading people with a back who can knock it up in there for 5+ a pop.

The more carries Weisman gets the better he gets. I've started to notice that late in the games he looks like he gets stronger with every carry. GO HAWKS!

I thought this until I saw him fumble last week. Bullock has actually looked pretty good the last couple of weeks and I am becoming more comfortable with him in the change-of-pace role. Hard to really argue with the Iowa rushing offense at this point. I'm starting to wish that they hadn't burned Daniels' redshirt as I seriously doubt he sees much PT the rest of the way.

Weismann and Daniels will be a great one two punch. Bullock on passing downs is ideal. He protects ok and is a really good pass catcher.

Weisman reads blocks well and runs north south and doesn't lose yards. I really like his style.

Three things Weisman does really well in my opinion ...

1) Patience ... with our OL zone blocking
2) Vision ... can't teach this but he seems to see anticipate where the hole is going to open
3) Forward lean ... he gets 2-3 extra yards with his running style ... and it doesn't hurt to be 240 lbs.

I think he has great footwork through the hole. It looks like he is stepping quickly and deliberately to avoid contact more than some other players might be dashing too fast and get tripped up.

I also thinks he does a better job following the called play, rather than giving up and trying to find another hole.

Minny was keying on him and he still got 147 yards. I think it's a lot of the things mentioned and he just has drive. He wants every last inch of ground. He seldom gets caught behind the line.

Vision
Keeps his knees high
Runs through arm tackles
Gets North in a hurry
Yes, he is explosive, though most people refuse to accept reality.

Weisman is also getting the majority of the carries so he's getting more opportunity to get better blocking at times. A couple of those runs yesterday, he wasn't even touched until the second level. He has fullback speed at the high end that's for sure, but he gets all the tough yards. He's the perfect back for this offense...the move the chains kind of guy. I think Canzeri should get more carries. He goes down pretty easy, but damn when he hits the gas, it's a blur. I think if he got 12 carries...he break a couple of long ones.

We are going to find out how good our running game is this week. MSU has two weeks to prepare...and they were good against the run already. My feeling is that Rudock is going to have to throw them out of an 8 man front. Smith and Powell are going to be huge this week...we have to make them pay for playing their corners on an island...which is what they do, and they commit 7-8 to stop the run.

First two sentences pretty much sums it up. Still not sure why so many people feel Bullock should lose his carries...there are many times that the OL block extremely well on run plays...and many times they whiff at the point of attack. Right now the OL just isn't consistent, but could become dominant when they do.

fast guys can succeed in a zone blocking scheme IF they learn when to be fast and when to slow it down and how to set up blocks. I don't think bullock has learned that yet. If he ever does he'll get more carries. Carzeri puts the ball on the ground. He may be the best all around guy but you can't do that and play for KF.

Weisman is decisive. He hits the hole at top speed because he doesn't have a second gear and that helps.

bullock seems to actually be the weakest back except that the other two have put it on the ground. He has had some holes similar to Weisman but got nothing which isn't good.

canzeri is still getting acclimated to playing. I think the year off affected him. He looks better each game he plays.

daniels seems like the best in the long run as he has power and speed. And seems to already have the patience most need to learn. Only thing he needs is the blocking for passing downs.
