What if....

With all the Alford talk, I am just throwing this out there. I know you cannot go back in time, but things are slow.

What if Davis was never forced out. No Alford at Iowa. Mr. Davis stays. Would his seat have gotten hot? Michigan State and Wisconsin became conference powers at that time and the other school in state won back to back conference titles, so what would the opinion of Hawkeye fans have been in say 2002 with Davis still at the helm?

I think Mr. Davis would have actually won the conference before he retired. Should have never been let go....the program was way to competitive and was all but dead until Fran has resurrected it. The dark ages of Fraud Lackluster are finally over.

We would have slowly drifted toward becoming a consistently lower half to lower third B10 team as Mr. Davis's recruiting efforts grew weaker and weaker, a major staff shake up would have had to occur to prevent it.

Folks, the name of the game is recruiting. Mr. Davis got lazy with recruiting and our talent took a huge dive. The guys he was bringing in were on par with Lickliter's recruits. Lickliter didn't want to recruit, didn't understand how to recruit and didn't hire assistants who did, thus the quick exit. To win at Iowa, the coach and his staff have to figure out how to find out of state talent on a consistent basis and layer that talent to be able to redshirt a guy here and there, grab a juco when needed and grab the Woodbury, Gesell, Barnes, Paige when they emerge.

Regardless of their recruiting prowess, any Iowa coach was going to see some success with Horner, Brunner - who were "from the womb" Hawks - and most likely Haluska in the mid-2000s. Davis would have coached that team to the Sweet Sixteen, perhaps further. This would have been his swan song and would have retired with his name on the Carver parquet.

The five years prior to that would have been average Davis teams at best.

IIRC, Collison was more than likely going to be a Hawk if Davis was still here coaching.

Every time this comes up and I see it I will dispute it. I know with absolute certainty he was going to Kansas...with or without Davis. I think the world of Davis. Nick is a good guy and loved the Hawks...did not like Davis' substitution pattern at all. Roy just did his thing and after hearing his recruiting pitch Nick was a Jayhawk.

Lickliter had one of the best recruiters in college basketball on his staff.

LaVall Jordan: He tried to get Burke and McGary both to Iowa when he was at Iowa, gets fired goes to Michigan and now Michigan has Top 10 classes the two full years he has been there.

His boss at Iowa was a little underwhelming.
