What if Utoff hadnt transferred?

We would be fighting with Northwestern and Penn State to stay out of the cellar. He is the only Go to player on the team and he really cant do it off the dribble. For those who thought we would be better without Marble I think we lost the only guy who could take people off the dribble and at times take over a game. Now it is even more apparent he was by far our best Point guard and he was the guy that got us running. With Utoff I hope we can battle for a 500 Big Ten record which wont be good enough unless we get a couple of good non conference wins. If you would have told me that in McCaffrey's 5th year we would be at this level only because of a player that he didn't recruit I would say that's not good.

For Utoff had he stayed in Wisconsin he would be playing and contributing on a team that has a chance to win it all. Of course Iowa has milder winters (usually)

It's kinda unfortunate for Fran. If he were coach between 5 and 10 years ago, we would be one of the best teams in the conference and be a lock for the dance. It sure makes his job tough trying to rebuild while the big 10 is at this level.

You just can't do as good as the fans expect in that situation when one of your break through recruits under achieves this bad. If Gesell was preforming like a top 100 recruit should be his junior year and Oges was making 3's at a clip a top 150 recruit should be his senior year (especially when that recruit got his ranking soley for his 3 point shooting ability) this team would be fighting for a top 3 spot in the conference this year.

This team would be better Uthoff is a ballhog. Team chemistry would be much better.

What if Melvin Gordon III had kept his commitment to Iowa? The football team would be a lot better, and would probably be playing for a BT championship.

I doubt Gordon would be doing the same things at Iowa that he is doing at Wisconsin. Iowa is pretty good at developing the talent for football, but they are also pretty good at wasting it. I remember when White for Basketball and Hamilton for football came from the same high school in Ohio. Hamilton was a four star all world tight end, and White was a lightly regarded small forward. White has been a star all four years, and Hamilton caught his first touchdown pass for football a couple of games ago. I think if Uthoff hadn't come to Iowa, the basketball staff probably would of gotten one of the transfers last spring. I'm glad they have Uthoff.

Scary to think about at this point. I don't think Uthoff's presence prohibited Fran from getting other transfers they went after last Spring. Uthoff did nothing last year to make a recruit think they couldn't win the starting spot. Based on what the Hawks showed in NY, if you remove Uthoff, this team has B1G cellar dweller written all over them. It's early though, and I'm holding out hope that Jok becomes a go to guy and Clemmons starts to really take the reigns at pg and the team can at least still make the tourney.

It's a damn good thing he transferred. Wisconsin is already a national title contender WITHOUT him and they have shooters all over the floor. I can't imagine Wisconsin with another 6-9" versatile forward that can stretch the floor.

when you think about it Uthoff fits the Wisconsin mold more so than the Iowa mold in terms of roster identity.

If Utoff Hasn't transfer, Bo Ryan would not be tormented by his another half.

You are sure right about how tough this league now. There are no gimmes any more. Alford squandered a golden opportunity when he coached here . The league was as bad as I can remember. Even if he had won here. I am glad the insufferable ***** is gone.

Uthoff doesn't really fit in to Wisconsin. When I think Wisky I think hard nosed defense and offensive discipline. When I think Uthoff I think soft and hesitant.

Better to be asking what if Uthoff didn't transfer in then what if Jake Kelly/Tony Freeman/Aaron Fuller etc. didn't transfer out. I wouldn't spend much time worrying about good fortune. McCaffrey recruited him in hard in high school. It's not like he just fell in our lap.

I feel the same way about Ray. His talent was wasted. Took a long time to use CJ also. I remember when Aaron and Ray beat the number one team in Ohio. Aaron had around 38 points, I believe and Ray had 16/18 rebounds. Always wondered if he should have been a walk on in basketball. Would have been beastly under the boards.....
