What if Harbaugh Goes to Mich?

Dick Rod can't last long at Michigan. Their fans are forced to react to a win over Illinois like they had just won the national championship. Which is both pitiful and wonderful to see. But RR likely doesn't come back next year. So, assuming that to be the case, what do you think would be the consequences to the B10 if Harbaugh left Stanford for Michigan next year? I see him as their #1 search candidate with the sky being the limit for compensation.

After watching Stanford throttle AZ, using both an aggresive defense and innovative offensive schemes, as well as watching them stay with Oregon for some time, I fear it could be back to the old Michigan dominance in about 2 years. With even better players at his disposal - look out! Which would be rather bad news for the Hawks and the B10 West.

Does anybody care to project the chances of this happening or share their thoughts if it did?.

I still don't know about Harbaugh. He has, imo, the best QB in college football on his team, last year one of the best Running backs plus a developing QB. Look what RIchRod did with his WV team with Pat White and Steve Slaton. It would be interesting to see though.

UM keeping Rich Rod is actually a good thing for us. He will undoubtedly have some good teams over time if he keeps his job but ultimately he does not value defense and special teams. This is a sure way to lose games in this conference as witnessed by his Big Ten record. What style beats his 'stats based - yardage football'? The Big Ten's grind it out, sound in all 3 phases of play style.

Remember which team in the Big East knocked off his previously undefeated high-powered West Virginia team (Pat White - Steve Slaton) late in a season? Yes, Dave Wannstead's Pittsburgh team. What style does Wannstead employ? Yes, a pro / Big Ten style of play. Coincidence?

Anyway I believe Jim Harbaugh would be an excellent hire. The new Big Ten will present challenges for our program as things stand now. Life will be even tougher if Michigan gets back to being a sound and elite program.

How could they get rid of him his team just scored 67 points and beat Illanoy? Hes the best....at least for a week.

Michigan runs the risk of becoming the next Notre Dame if they don't make the right decision with RR. I am not sure what the right decision is, but if they fire him they better (for them) make the right hire. They have a divided fan base already and the only thing that is going to change that is winning.

Because they gave up 65 in the process. How embarrassing in my book for a program with the prestige and history of Michigan.

That doesnt matter they scored 67 points. Did you hear Michigan scored 67 points. You know they played good because they scored 67 points. If you didnt notice my post was sarcastic because this slam dunk ball is only cool in the south.

That's a really good point. I think Harbaugh would be the man but then again if that fails they are even deeper trouble. Wonder what Deace honestly thinks about keep or fire RR and if so who should be next?

My guess is they stay with RR unless the know with 100% certainty they can get Les Miles. I doubt LSU will be playing for a National Championship this year, but who knows.

No I figured you were being sarcastic but I think in my mind I just can't believe a Michigan team could surrender that many points(granted some of the scoring was attributable to OT)....

It's going to be interesting.... If RR valued D and special teams and had them up to snuff then they would definitely be dangerous given his team's offensive capability.

I hear what you are saying KHawk. Part of me is more worried about UM keeping RR, because he seems like he is able to recruit. He is a Defensive Coordinator away from being a dominant force in the NC picture.

I live in Michigan and the fans thought it was the greatest thing ever. I dont like games like ours this week but I really hate games with no defense whatsoever. They wanted to hang RR from a tree now they love him. Many fair weather fans here. On a related note Michigan State fans have crawled back to the ghetto..not a peep from sparty as of late. Very quiet for a one loss team.

Michigan's offensive philosophy is one of the most productive schemes currently in college football. They get no help from their defense. Their offense earns almost everything on their own.

They don't need a top 10 defense. They recruit well enough. I don't see any reason why they won't be able to eventually develop at least a top 40-50ish defenses. And if Rich Rod gets to stay around long enough for that to happen then cross your fingers and hope for a flurry of fluke turnovers or scoring in the 40's if you want to win.

Beating IL was a respectable win. They have been playing well this year.

I think the key will be how UM fares against two other 3-phase grind it out teams; Wisconsin & OSU. If they get blasted in both I think UM fans will be calling for a change but if they win one of those two and/or play very tight ball games in both then maybe the promise of glory is renewed?

Beating IL is a good win, but in a 67-65 shootout? Thats sloppy ball. Just like our game a win is a win but we still saw how it happened.
