What Happened to the fun up and down Basketball

It's pretty simple actually. The other team just has to make sure they get back on defense since we're not very good in the half court. Once other coaches figured that out, we became very ineffective. That's pretty much it.

Good observation. It has to be an intentional move by the staff in order to work on the half court offense and/or save the legs for the B1G season.

Pepperdine ran a lot of 2-2-1 zone press. That type of press is meant to slow the ball down and force the opposing team to pass sideways to bring the ball up the court.

If the hawk front line is not cleaning the boards then the guards need to hang in the lane to help rebound which makes it harder to break. Hawks lost some window cleaners to graduation in Melsahn, McCabe, and marble.

If woodbury, white, uthoff, and oleseni cant clean the boards and then do quick outlets then the fast break will suffer. last year white was the one laying in a lot of fast break baskets from the 3 spot but now he is at the 4 and needs to rebound.

People like to jump to conclusions about this team. It's game 5. It takes a while for basketball teams to develop. We won tonight against a decent team after a tough trip to NY. I'm not going to complain about what it looks like.

Tonight was another solid pre-season building block game. Pepperdine was a solid team with decent size down low and pressing guard play much like what may very well be awaiting the Hawks once conference play starts. The Hawks got up early and then were challenged on multiple occasions and even though 10+ pt leads got trimmed to single digits a couple different times, it was great to see different Hawks come through and hit big shots (Jarrod, Mike, Anthony, Whitey).

Yeah, I said the same thing in another thread. Isn't it our birthright to see run up-and-down-the-floor basketball?

More importantly, How can a team develop when the players it needs to develop are sitting on the bench against quality opponents where they will learn the most to develop?

With White at the 4 it means he's got to board at the defensive end and he's not leaking out and running. Woody bless his heart isn't a great rebounder and Uthoff isn't either. So White has to. Last year with him at the 3 and having either MB or MCabe on the floor rebounding (pretty well I might add) that allowed White to do what he does best and run the floor for fast breaks. Not to mention with no player like Marble on this years team... Maybe Dickerson could help with that but so far I don't see him playing enough mins to factor....

Pretty much this. Iowa's halfcourt sets are a nightmare

Another change this year is White at the 4. Overall a much better fit but the one downside is he may not be able to leak out and run as much. Jarrod at the 3 spot has the ability but he is also one of our shot blockers with his length so you have a guy that is often leaving his feet attempting to swat a shot where Whitey tended to try and poke the ball out from behind to a teammate before the shot which then gave him a head start on the break.
