What Happened to Ohio $tate?

People who think paying NCAA athletes is the answer are stupid. They think just because a star football player would get a $500 stipend every month, he would suddenly have no interest in a booster offering him tens of thousands of dollars. Paying players would create so many more problems than it would solve. Also, if you're paying athletes who bring in money to school, I assume you would have to charge athletes who play sports which lose money?

The answer is to cut sports that dont make money like some of the programs are doing now to Wrestling and Baseball. Why should AD's, and women's sports be able to get advantages from Football and men's BBalls hard work.

"So let me get this straight... if they vacate OSUs last season, does that mean I might get my job back, since I technically beat them?"

/saw this elsewhere, got a chuckle and thought I'd share.

Yes, there should be no varsity college sports unless they make money because the only purpose of college athletics is to make money for the school. You're a genius.

They can play any sport they want as long as they can support themselves.

USC didnt get the death penalty and they paid players in both FB and BB.

Auburn got off scott free.

OSU will not likely see any long term impact from this. Tressel may be fired but I dont see any significant sanctions coming their way.

Maybe I'm too old fashioned. I used to respect Ohio State. Woody Hayes, with all of his faults, stood for something. He had integrity. He cared about his players. He tried to do it the right way. He was a real teacher who was in it for the kids and the school.

Now Ohio State cheats. All the time. What Tressel has done is incredible. He should be fired. Now.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: Ohio State should be given the death penalty. No school has ever deserved it more. You are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. And to the cynics who say that every school is like this: I say b.s., no they are not. Ohio State takes the cake.

Absolute shame for a once-proud program. Unbelievable.
Hayes was a staight up a$$hole. fOSU put up with him because he won games.

It's not fair to the men's sports that get cut, either.

No you're stupid - see how easy that is? Paying athletes from the revenue producing sports is going to happen, the courts are getting involved and there will be a complete overhaul of college athletics (see the latest Real Sports round table with Bryant Gumble on this issue, the first suits have already been filed). Paying athletes is the right thing to do when billions of dollars of revenue are being divided up to everyone but them.

So if they are getting a piece of the revenue, do athletes who compete in non-revenue generating sports now have to pay for their expenses? How are you going to divide up where the money goes? Base it on jersey sales? I don't see many fans wearing offensive linemen's jerseys. Divide it up equally? So a backup DL who never sees the field will get the same amount as a starting QB? The NCAA paying players would lead to more corruption than ever before. If you think this is going to happen anytime soon, you're dreaming.

You certainly ask a lot of questions in that post but here you are - No, I won't but the courts will, No, No, yes, and finally yes.

with all the built in advantages that ose and mich have---it is sad they are both cheaters. They are as bad as the SEC trash

It's all about TV revenue$. duh-OSU, USC, Auburn, Florida, some of the other cheaters, make big azz money for the NCAA. No way are they ever going to kill the golden geese.

If Ferentz had done the same thing and used "ineligible" (the NCAA's own word) players in a BCS bowl game, Iowa's punishment would be swift and harsh.

The NCAA is the USA's FIFA.

Legally paying players? Not going to happen. The only fair thing that the NCAA can do is lighten up on some of their OTHER restrictions. The Jeremy Bloom case is an excellent example of where the letter of the law simply does not get it right.

Players should be allowed to take endorsements in situations like that (endorsements were the only way for Bloom to fund his Olympic training, and the endorsements were for skiing gear).

They also should be able to pursue their "actual" careers. Darnell Autry was an acting/drama major at Northwestern, and he had to climb a mountain of red tape to get a 5-minute cameo in a low-budget film. Now any other drama major could sign up and take the lead role if the director wanted them to. But not a drama major who plays college football? Meanwhile guys like Russell Wilson can pocket a salary playing minor league baseball in the summer and keep their eligibility in football?

Remember when Drew Tate won a hole-in-one contest, and had to return the money?

It's the stupid crap like THAT that needs to change. Players don't need to be officially paid, but they need to be able to pursue the sort of opportunities that are afforded to the average college student.
