What does ISU have in the cupboard?

I am following up on the latest "Over/under 7.5 wins" thread where more than a few people think the hawks will have trouble with ISU. Set me straight but didnt ISU lose over half their overall starters or even 60%+ of them. I thought I heard people saying they would be young and green.

Why should the hawks with most of their offensive starters coming back and I think 7 defensive starters coming back have trouble with ISU at Kinnick? Yes I know KF butchers this game half the time but is it mainly the Campbell factor that fans think he is a better more exciting coach for ISU? Is the ISU late season QB getting a 6th year?

If you look at the score of these games since 1999 ISU only wins close games, Iowa wins some close games but the only blowouts have been about 4 or 5 times by really good Iowa teams in 2003, 09, 10, 15, and 2016.

I do agree this is a needed win to be a very good team.

Please, I need answers?

The clown running back will be the one to stop. If the defense can contain him there will be no problem with the clowns. After all Mr. Heisman graduated.

I Happen to live in Ames and have for a very long time actually..I hate to admit it..but Campbell is a very good coach and this ISU program is nowhere close to previous regimes IMO.

They did not lose half their starters.

OL:
Knipfle
JGJ
Meeker
Foster

3 of the 4 started..Foster was a Frosh who played a lot at LT at times. They also have a juco kid who came in last year and was looking like going to push to start but was hurt all year and didnt play at all..so who knows if he will this year.

WR:
Butler
Eaton
D. Jones

Butler is a stud..Eaton was a stud when he came in for Lazard...D jones had great frosh year but regressed some last year. They have several other WR’s who are tall and big.

QB:
Kempt- He’s a very solid QB. He just doesnt make mistakes and had 67% comp.

RB:
D. Mont- Might be top 3 RB in country honestly...Kid is going to be 1st-2nd rd pick next year when he leaves early and he will.

Croney- played well when Mont. went down last year.

TE: they return all 3 TE’s.

Defense: I was actually impressed with ISU defense last year. Hate to say it but that defense changed completely after they lost to Iowa and TX. THey switched to 3-3-5 basically. And it gave the Big 12 fits. Teams struggled running against this defense. Memphis (bowl game) came into game as a top 30 running team and ISU just completely shut it down.

DL: Lima, Bailey both return..Lima is a stud and Bailey aint bad either.

LB: Spears, Harvey return. Both are all conf LB’s this year. Especially Spears.

DB: Peavy and Payne both return..Peavy one of better DB’s in big 12.

Safety: this is the question for ISU defense. They lost all 3.

What can i say i was bored and it’s May. But I watched a lot of ISU last year and that team got a lot better as the year went on with a lot of young kids playing. Any Iowa fan that thinks this is the ISU of old and Iowa will just walk all over them is mistaken. I’m very worried about this game. They will be balanced on offense with a stud RB and a defense that will be very respectable.

Iowa had the answers from 1983-87

51-10@ Ames
59-21
57-3@ Ames, became #1 ranked in country days later.
43-7
48-9@ Ames

Combined massacre: 258-50
Avg score: 51.6-10

God those are beautiful numbers.

I think people overestimate the impact Kempt had. Don't get me wrong, he's a good QB and a good decision maker, but he's not going to put an offense on his back. ISU stayed in the game (and took the lead) against us last season because Park was willing to take shots downfield and challenge our secondary, and that's what opened up the run game for Montgomery (plus some bad tackling). Kempt has neither the arm nor the mentality to challenge a defense like Park did.

They like to crow about how young their team is, but forget that Iowa was just as young last season. I think it'll be tight, but more experience for our young players from last season and the game being at Kinnick is what wins it for Iowa.

I'll echo a lot of what Oldman said. We'll miss Lazard and Lanning but we return a lot of guys at every position group. Montgomery is the best overall player ISU had had at any position at least since Troy Davis.

Kempt isn't great. However he did complete 66% of his passes and only had 3 INT's only playing Big 12 teams. And he will go downfield, he just won't force it into tight windows like Park would.

I think Miller has said several times that he is a little concerned about Iowa stopping the run in the middle. IMO ISU still has trouble on the offensive line, but the middle will be where the strength is, and if Montgomery can get decent yardage between the tackles that could really open things up for a receiving corp that still has very big targets on the outside in Eaton and Butler, and I expect Chase Allen to get a little more involved.

I definitely don't expect ISU to win, but I do expect them to compete well in the game. ISU is showing up in some way too early top 25 lists for 2018 so it's just not ISU homers thinking ISU could be decent next year. However I think the Iowa game is important because ISU's schedule is very frontloaded and they could get pulverized in the first few weeks and they'll need every possible win.
