What could have been.....

I normally hate playing the "what-if" game, but given where we are currently, it's hard not to sometimes.

If we had beaten Nebraska, PSU and one of the Purdue games, we'd be sitting at 18-10 and 10-5 in the conference and looking at a first round bye in the BTT. We'd be talking about what seed we'd be getting instead of what we have to do to get in.

But when you have a young team like we have, and a coach who hasn't finished his 2nd year yet, the only thing you can consistently count on is inconsistency.

But it sure stings a little to not have gotten those three games, that's for sure.

Could've lost to Wisky x2, Indiana and Michigan and been hoping we could get to win #12 by the end of the year, so you have to take your lumps.

That's just crazy talk! :)

We beat Indiana and Michigan by double digits and controlled both Wisky games for the most part.

We had both Purdue and Nebraska down by double digits and while we had a clunker against PSU, we still had it down to 2 with a chance to tie it at the line.

But I know what you're saying. These things don't happen in a vacuum and if we win one or all of those games we lost, we maybe don't win some of the others. It's sorta like going back to 2002 football and saying "what if" for the ISU game. If we win that game, maybe we don't play with a chip on our shoulder the rest of the year and drop a game or two in the Big 10.

Still, it sucks not getting those three winnable games!

What if Davis could recruit like Raveling, Lute hadn't left, the Hawks made their free throws against Jacksonville, & Ronnie Harmon hadn't fumbled four times in the first half of the Rose Bowl?

Just couldn't resist another Davis slam, could you? "What if Raveling could coach like Davis" should be the what if.

Campbell and Clemson were also winnable games so now we could be at 20-8 and probably a lock for the dance

or another big "IF" Lester had not hurt his knee against Louiville a NT?
or what if Iowa had beaten UNLV perhaps a NT, but that is all they are what if's.
and if NorthEastern hadn't hit that miracle shot to upset Iowa and Alfords team would have moved on rather go home. would Alford be gone or still here with a happier fan base

Does anyone remember we tried to give Minnesota the win at their place when Iowa kept missing all those free throws down the stretch? Can you imagine what might have happened had Marble missed the front end of a 1 on 1 in the final minute last night a second time? We could easily be debating a 13-15 team trying to figure out ways for Iowa to get a CIT/CBI bid.

northeastern hitting a miracle shot can't be considered a what if because it never happened

Not if he hadn't hurt his knee against Louisville, but if he hadn't hurt his knee at all. He already had two knee surgeries prior to that injury. I still say that the '80 team before Lester hurt his knee was one of the three best Iowa teams I've ever seen.

But you guys know what's funny? Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin fans are all saying the same thing. Minnesota would have clinched a bid without 2 losses to Iowa, Michigan would be tied for the lead in the B1G, and Wisconsin would only be a game out and probably a top 10 team.
