What coaches were a part of the HC discussion after Alford and Lick?

I remember some crazy times on both boards when Iowa was searching for new head coaches in hoops. Some of the names I remember were...

Post-Alford:
Rick Majerus (I remember a STRONG rumor that he was the guy late one night on HawkeyeInsider. I think Jon spoke about it? Anyway, that got me all excited and then the next day I think it was pretty much confirmed to not be true.)

Kevin Stallings (Heard he has some incident at the Amana Hawkeye Classic back in the day and would never be hired here. Can anyone confirm this?)

Gregg Marshall
Bruce Pearl
Lon Kruger
Mark Turgeon
Tom Crean
Kirk Speraw
Steve Lavin

Post-Lickliter:
Brian Gregory
Doug Wojcik
Bruce Pearl
Lon Kruger
BJ Armstrong
Steve Forbes
Kevin Gamble
Tony Barbee
Keno Davis
Brad Brownell
Kevin Stallings
Steve Lavin
Scott Drew

I think Wojcik was actually interviewed along with Fran, and Iowa wanted to interview Gregory but Dayton was still in the NIT.

If you have other names feel free to post them.

I remember pushing for Reggie Theus after both Alford and Lick. I think he got a look after Lick was canned but he was dead set on coaching in the NBA.

I am pleased that we choose Fran. I did like Brian Gregory because of the way his Dayton Flyers were playing in the NIT beating North Carolina for the championship.......

I also liked his MSU style of play......

I was surprised by Fran being chosen. He is exactly what the program needed and he is making huge strides....

So far looks like we might have got the best man for the job!:)

I remember Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois) being a candidate both times. I believe he's an assistant at Kansas State now.

Nice job of compiling this. Fun looking at what might, or might not, have been. So far Barta appears to have done a better job than the fans of figuring out who should be the next Iowa coach, at least as far as Fran is concerned.

Herkyalert, thanks for starting this thread. Interesting reminder of the chatter from a time back in the day.

At first poo pooed your OP. You did such a good job with including everyone and everybody and others chiming in with up-dates, thoughts and analysis.

Now we can all LOL because Iowa does have the MAN.. and it's FRAN.

Assuming his wife and kids like Iowa City, he has the fire and desire to recruit and coach Champions for the next 10 years or so... OH Yeah... a great fit for everyone.

as a follow up... does anyone know?

How well does Fran, his wife and the kids really like Iowa City, the Mid West and the B1g Ten. Insider knowledge, personal stories, and anectdotes are welcome.

people like to bash barta for the lick hire, but you have to realize that we were turned down by kruger, gregory, stallings, altman, crean and another that i cant remember before settling on him.

Excellent point if true and have no reason not to believe. I personally don't believe any could have done as well as Fran.
