What are the longest undefeated streaks in Iowa history?

The great 6-0 start for Iowa made be think about the best undefeated streaks in Iowa history (please understand, I'm not predicting ANYTHING the rest of the way this year; too many injuries!). Here they are: (1) From 1899 through 1901, Iowa went 24 consecutive games without a loss (21 wins and 3 ties). The Hawks won the Big Ten title in 1900; (2) Beginning in 1920 and continuing through 1922, Iowa won 20 consecutive games and 2 Big Ten Titles (3) Beginning 2008 and continuing through 2009, Iowa won 14 consecutive games (no Big Ten championship, but an Orange Bowl championship). What are the best starts to a season in Iowa history? 1899, 9-0-1; 1900, 7-0-1; 1921, 7-0; 1922, 7-0; 1928, 6-0; 1956, 5-0; 1957, 6-0-1; 1958, 7-0-1; 1960, 6-0; 1985, 7-0; 2009, 9-0; 2015, 6-0. As you can see, starting out 6-0 hasn't happened very often!

I don't know much about the unbeaten streaks but I'm enjoying this one because lately we've been losing one that we should win.

It sure sucks that injuries are doing everything they can to ruin our season. If our 5 injured starters were still healthy, going undefeated would actually be realistic right now.

Maybe. But going undefeated requires, in addition to staying pretty healthy, a ton of good bounces (won't say "luck"). We got a TON of those in 2009. We've had a few nice bounces this year (including the Vaughn fumble last Saturday, a well-timed fumble by Wisconsin, not to mention a 57-yard FG). But going undefeated in B1G requires darn near ALL the bounces, plus Urban Meyer/O$U-level "gut check" (read that as, "integrity").

Every game we win slides the probability of the "good" bounces NOT going our way. But, it's still been a great time thus far!

I thought the 2008 team ended on a winning streak and by 2009 the streak was one of the longest active in the country.

I agree with this. Im happy that Iowa is putting themselves in the position to get those bounces.

We need Hawknick to answer this one. I'm sure they probably won like 25 in a row from 1927-1929. He'd know.

I was right! He PM'ed me and let me know that Iowa won 23 straight from 1898-1901 and 20 straight from 1920-1923.

In all reality, the injury issue has actually probably evened itself out. Here's what I mean by that.....

1. We faced an ISU team in the 2nd half without their top DL who was gashing us the entire first half. It was a tie game until late in the 4th quarter.
2. We faced a Pitt team without their star RB and one of the 5 best RBs in the country. We won on a last second field goal.
3. We faced a Wisky team without their star RB. We won by 4 points.
4. We faced an Illinois team without their best RB and it was a field goal game until late in the 4th qtr.

So while the injury bug on our end sucks right now, I'd say we've also been the beneficiary of a ton of fortuitous injuries on our opponents' side as well.....
