I don't think the sky is falling. But the reality is, everyone has so been so optimistic about this season for a couple of reasons. First, we returned everybody from a good NIT team last year. Additional reasons are be related to height and size, and an incredibly deep roster.
There is this assumption among many that all of a sudden Iowa will start winning these games because they're a year older and more mature. That's not too wild of an assumption, because programs experience it all the time. But as of now, I haven't seen anything from Iowa that indicates they will be winning the close ones.
Iowa can score and defend well, but in the second half, when the 8 minutes mark hits, they get tense. I am extremely dissappointed with their ability to close games. In particular, it seems that guys find themselves out of their comfort zones doing things outside of their role on the team. Guys handling the ball that shouldn't be, guys taking shots that aren't in their skill set, etc. This leads to turnovers and bad shots. If they keep losing close games, they're only going to get really good at losing close games. You have to win close games to learn how to win close games. If not, they're going to be the best 25-13 team in the nation, again.
Hopefully this is just an early season occurrence and it will take a few tough losses to get it figured out.
