We'll know which direction we are headed in based on timing...

Gillespie, Lavin and Keno are all available now... absolutely zero reason to delay.

Pearl, Turgeon, Drew are all in the tourney... and we'd have to wait until their season is over.

The longer this draws out, the more likely it is our coach comes from that second group in my opinion.

That's a great point....nice post!

The only thing that would lead me to questioning that notion is that Barta specifically said he was setting up a search committee, so it's not like he's going to have carte blanche authority to interview, offer and hire a coach on his own.

As another poster pointed out in a thread I started, the search committee is in place to help with the mechanics of the process. (Even if I disagree with the point of using them). Great observation, BSpringsteen.

Go Hawks!

We can't afford it to be anyone other then the second group. Take our time this time and spend what is necessary...heck if no coach by the deadline, just have Ferentz bring the football team over and tell them to run and gun for "lay ups only" probably score more points, and foul out our whole team. LOL

I don't think this is the case at all. He certainly has a list of canidates, but he isn't going to rush into it. It is better he does this right than does it fast. He is probably going to get informed council from a variety of knowledgable individuals, plan interviews, and review the results.

This kind of stuff doesn't go down in a day, or even a week. Not even gas stations hire people on the spot. There is a process here, and when we are talking about the kind of money that is involved here, it is a very deliberate process.

I was already thinking that we shouldn't expect a hire any sooner than the next couple of weeks. I am going to presume that Barta has a list of candidates, and his first several choices (I hope) are probably coaching in this year's NCAA Tournament. That means that, at the very least, those teams won't be done playing for another week. Then there will be contacts, negotiation, and all of that stuff. Probably at least two weeks before anything is finalized and announced. Maybe three depending on how far Barta's candidates go in the tourney and if he has trouble finding someone who's interested.

It would be incredibly stupid to make a hire because of timing.

If Bruce Pearl is willing to listen after the tournament, and Tennessee makes it to the final four, we wont hear until April.

Of course thats probably a long shot in several different ways.

I'll be very surprised if it's any of the six.

Who is responsible for putting a committee in place? If Barta is the one that decided to do it, then he certainly does has carte blanche to decide whenever he wants to. The committee was initiated by him, not the university president. Now, if the president and Barta agreed together to set up a committee and he was told by her to do it a certain way, then he is obviously tied to that. But, if they both agreed to a committee to help the process, but agreed that Barta can act as he wants at any time...

Contact has to be made with the coaches in the tournament that Barta is interested in talking with. You need to find out who is interested in talking and who isn't. Otherwise, you could lose your pick of the second string while waiting for the first string.

Are you sure Barta ever said "search committee"?

I heard he plans to utilize a search firm, which is a different thing entirely.

Search committee reference

I only used the term "search committee" because that is what Rawkhawk73 referenced in his post. I didn't hear any of the presser. I apologize if the term was incorrect or used loosely by me.

Obviously Barta did use a search "firm" before, but I thought there was also a loose-knit committee at the time, too. I could be wrong on that last point.

Why would Turgeon leave A&M?

A&M could outbid us if they had to, and I believe he is well liked down there. He is a B12 guy. There is less pressure at A&M than there is at Iowa, really. They have much more money for resources other than salary than Iowa. And Gillespie is the perfect example to him as to why not to leave. The grass isn't always greener.

Why would he leave that job for Iowa?

I don't think anyone is claiming the hire is being made because of timing. The claim is that the lack of immediate announcement could be an indication that the AD is looking at particular coaches who are currently occupied with postseason play rather than coaches who are already idle.
