Weisman transitions from Air Force to Iowa - The Daily Iowan

From article:

Mark Weisman made it through six-week military boot camp. He woke up early every day to run miles and miles. He watched the football body he had worked so hard to build shrink by 25 pounds, with nothing he could do to stop it.

And he’s supposed to struggle mentally with one dropped pass?

“I think I could’ve made the play. It’s a play I expect to make,â€￾ Weisman said about his drop in the end zone against Iowa State on Sept. 8. “It just didn’t happen on that particular play. *It’s hard to let it go, but you have to. We’re moved on from that.â€￾

Weisman, a Buffalo Grove, Ill., native, committed to play for Air Force out of high school. He said on Tuesday that he had wanted to join the military, and Air Force’s use of the fullback in its offense made it an attractive football destination.*

Before school — and two-a-day practices — started, Weisman had to get through basic training. He said the rigid lifestyle was more difficult mentally than camp was physically. And after a semester there, Weisman realized “it wasn’t the place for me.â€￾

Weisman’s punishing strength and speed have earned him a nickname from his teammates.

“You can tell by his body he came from a military school,â€￾ Bullock said. “He’s like a juggernaut.â€￾
That was familiar to Vandenberg.

“The Juggernaut. Great word for him,â€￾ the quarterback said. “I call him that a lot. I don’t know who came up with it, but he even kind of walks like one. He’s got so much muscle that he’s stiff.â€￾

He runs exactly like an Air Force fullback--as low to the ground as possible in a straight line with both hands on the ball at all times. USAFA isn't for everyone and I'm glad to see he's having success elsewhere (specifically for the Hawks).

Should have blasted him into the line at the 3 last Saturday instead of Bullock.

LOL @ Air Force "Boot Camp". Good for the kid, but let's not pretend that the AF basic is tough. The two-a-days at the D1 level would easily be tougher.

He went through basic cadet training (BCT) at the Academy, not basic at Lackland. The two are very different (BCT is more like Officer Training School than basic), and physically speaking BCT is more demanding than enlisted basic training. The Air Force Academy's BCT is pretty much identical to West Point's and Navy's, and the physical standards are the same. You could even argue that USAFA is more challenging physically since it lies at 7,000+ feet above sea level.

And he literally started two-a-days for football the day after BCT ended. I had football players in my class who lost 20-30 pounds over the summer and didn't gain it back until after their first football season was complete.

Basically he said they were freaking psycho there. He realized it and got out as fast as he could. The military is good for people who are comfortable with rigid hierarchy and their place in it. Doesn't work for more independent thinkers or doers.

He wasn't saying the physical work was too hard.

That being said, I would expect Iowa would represent a happy medium.

Admittedly, I didn't read the article, I made the assumption he went through BCT as an enlisted type. I know that the academy guys go through hell, so that certainly changes my perspective.

The military definetley isn't for everyone. But to use that as an ecxcuse is just plain stupid.
You certainly have to be able to think independently to lead and problem solve. If you can't, you have no business in the military. That goes for all grades above private. You have to be able to lead or your stay will be a short one.

Critical thinking and independent thinking are different things. You definitely need to be a strong critical thinker to lead. But it must be within the confines of chain of command, or you won't be there long.

Glad to see we're comparing boot camps to one another. Will he get a chance to run the option? #armedforcesoffenses
