Weigers, Cook, Boyle

what are their futures at Iowa if Stanley is named the starting QB in 2017?

Yes, I know Boyle already switched to WR, but did he play at all in 2016? Will he still stick around in 2017?

do you think Cook will learn from AJ Derby's attempt to become a starting QB in FBS?

will Weigers transfer like Cody Sokol did, or will he stick it out like Wienke did?

It's interesting. I've laid out a possible scenario happening where say Weigers leaves, Cook moves to TE and Boyle comes back to backup Stanley with Mansell coming in to RS...
Weigers it just depends. Is he happy being a career backup or not? He's the first domino/wild card.
Cook needs to see the writing on the wall he's not a QB at D1... I'm semi surprised he didn't move during bowl prep.
Boyle I don't think will want to stay at WR. As it sits now without Oliver and any incoming newbies (notice my optimism) He's looking at being 6 or 7thish on the depth chart. (Vandeberg, Smith, Scheel, Falconer, Young, and Nash) That leaves a little bit of special teams and that's it... I'd rather be the #2 qb then 7th WR I guess but that's just me...

Wiegers has the size and and athleticism to play out of the gate at an FCS school, and learning Iowa's system can't hurt him. Another year of wearing headphones (which he will) will about guarantee that he never plays college football. I think he bolts. It'd be different if there was a competition at QB but I think Kirk has all but said Stanley is the future. Wiegers has to see the writing on the wall.

I do see that he's a biomedica engineering major though, so maybe he's more concerned with graduating from a school like Iowa than playing ball. If that's the case than I'd be happy to have a kid like that as a backup as opposed to someone who's never been on the turf.

Cook's future is directly aligned to Weigers. No Weigers = Cook being 1 play away from starting. We need someone who has a clue back there. If Peyton can pass up Cook in the fall then he can change the position, if not he is needed there. Unless Weigers stays, because he too would be one play away from starting.

Also, I am sure the coaches want to stagger Start key and Peyton by more than one year if they can.
I wonder if that's another reason why Stanley didn't redshirt. That'd put 2 yrs between him and a redshirting Peyton... I don't think Cook is a qb all... Staff has been looking past him for awhile. I think maybe they keep him dangling at QB incase Weigers leaves and Boyle don't come back to QB... But outside that I can't see why he'd stay at QB...

Here is another interesting scenario. What happens if Weigers beats Stanley in the offseason competition (which KF had alluded to)? Does Kirk redshirt Stanley? Or waste another year of his eligibility?

And of course after I post, the depth chart comes out with Stanley the lone #1.

This was exactly my thoughts. Stanley is the starter with Wiegers as his backup if he goes down. Peyton then RS's and then has that 2 year gap.

Which still makes Weigers the domino starter. I wonder at what point he may be asked (maybe he already has and decided)what he's doing. It may be common knowledge he is or isn't leaving amongst the coaches and teammates. That stuff can be kept under wraps till whenever they want to jump. I kinda like the idea of him staying he seems like a great teammate and he's gotta know the O by now. Having either Cook, Boyle or Mansell backing up Stanley is pretty scary to me now that I think about it....

I know he's a competitor at the high D1 level and they all want to play but NEVER forget that the best spot/everyone's favorite player on the team is the backup QB.

No doubt. Which is why felt if Wiegers leaves and Cook were to move to TE Boyle might switch back to QB...

It would be nice if the QBs could earn the position with game-day competition.

I think in 87 JHF had Hartlieb - McGwire - and Poholsky (?) battle it out on the gameday.

I just think Kirk locks into a guy and doesn't even allow that the other guys might bring an intangible when real bullets are flying.

I mean with the pussy OOC we have every year that should give Kirk a chance to witness more than one QB taking snaps.

I know I know. Shame on me for even suggesting a meritocracy.

I hope Weigers stays. He has 2 years of eligibility left. Is he an NFL QB? Probably not, so he will make his living off of his degree. So do you transfer down to some Missouri Valley school just to play for 2 years and then get a degree from a lesser valued academic school (no offense to Missouri Valley academics).

I would think the most likely scenario would be that he comes back for 2017, battles with Stanley and will be the clear #2. Maybe he gets some snaps in blowouts, or potentially injury replacement, but most importantly finish his Iowa degree and graduate spring 2018. Then he can stay with Iowa his last year (2018) or transfer similar to Rudock as a 5th year graduate transfer.

KF has mentioned more than once that moving someone into the #2 position gives them a lot of reps in practice. In my opinion, that would be a better growth opportunity than a little garbage time in a regular season game. But, yeah, even garbage time would have some value going forward.
