Wegher Orange Bowl TD Run

Just finished watching the Orange Bowl. Wegher had a big TD run late in the game. He outran multiple Tech defenders. Pretty impressive. While Hampton is likely going to be a great back for us, having another experienced back with break away speed would have been nice. We seem to run through more than our fair share of running backs each year secondary to injuries.

Was very bittersweet watching that, considering the story that came out today indicating Brandon may not ever wear a Hawkeye uniform again - at the very least this season.

That run shut the door on GT

I forgot just how close that game was until late in the 4th quarter. We should have put them away a lot earlier.

It may be just me, but i thought it looked like GT defenders were just running beside him once he broke for the first down. It could be one of those things, that the coach said if we dont stop them, just let them score to try and get the ball back.

uh, it's just you.

I'm just saying if i was playing D, I would have tried a little bit harder to stop him. I mean no one tried to dive and trip him up and there was no reach at him after the first guy missed.

They underestimated his burst. They thought they could catch him,and by diving they would not have the sure tackle...but surprise..he ran away from them. No respect for white rb's...it is so unusual,it is not surprising.

Watching that makes me hope all the more that Brandon will be back,if not this year, then next. He is a heckuva ballplayer.

Brandon had some big carries in that game, and the TD was a thing of beauty. He was especially impressive in his ability to protect the ball, take a pounding and stay relatively healthy last season. I'm bummed all over that he likely won't be back ever.

It's a little early to shut the book on him forever. He can still redshirt. If/when this season is over and he doesn't redshirt, then I'll let it go. Otherwise I'm going to leave the door open.

+1

If Iowa truly wants to be considered elite this year, they need to put the foot on the neck and press. (hello offense....hello!)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but after watching the BTN preview, BW will be easily forgotten by the end of the year. Hampton looks insanely good, and extremely quick/fast. He's gonna light up the stage this year.

We have at least 2 Rbs on the roster better than Wegher now. Probably will have 4 better than him next year.

We'll be just fine.

I agree Hampton looks good but as we've seen Iowa RBs -- with the exception of that guy playing now for the NY Jets -- rarely make it through a season unscathed by injury. Obviously we all want and hope Hampton and A-Rob to stay healthy. But Wegher picked up the slack last year and had a very nice season. Iowa is, or was, a better team with Wegher in the lineup than it will be without him.

You never "let" somebody score to go down two scores.

On rare occassions it makes sense to allow a touchdown to get the ball back, but only where a field goal and melting the clock means that you will lose. One scenario that comes to mind was the Packers-Broncos Super Bowl. The Broncos would have gone ahead with a field goal late in the 4th quarter, were within chip-shot field goal range, had a dependable kicker, and could have ran the clock out. The Packers let them score a TD to get the ball back.

However, you never let someone score to go down two scores.

The next time an Iowa back who is the main guy makes it thru a season unscathed will make him the rare exception. Not sure if it is because we practice so physically,or our penchant for pounding the ball in games, or our blocking scheme, but we always need at least 4 healthy rbs to start the season, but in 2004 we needed 5..and did not have them.
I love how Jewel is running, but he looks small to me,and I wonder how he will hold up.
ARob is small, and also has a history of injury.
Wegher got dinged,and is smallish.
Coker already is dinged.
Johnson had an ACL last year.
Paki is about the only guy who stays healthy. Put him in a bubble.
