We need to work on our "Prevent" defense.

I want to say it was ISU also where we were bad at knowing to defend at the end of the game.

Were playing too soft not wanting to foul and letting them do whatever they want.

We need to pressure the ball more at the end their - we let them use so little clock and energy for the last two minutes.

We did pressure and gave up a 3 pt play. However at the end of the half I wish we would continue to play the same way that helped us build the lead. Push the ball...we slowed it down and ****** away a 20 pt lead.

We were playing a no three defense. It means you guard the perimeter and don't help on the drive. You are willing to give up a two because you are going to get fouled and get 2 free throws. We can do better at it but at least understand the situation. The main problem was white fouling when he got beat. That is a high school mistake in that defense. It allowed a 3 pt play when the whole theory is to stop 3 pointers and 3 pt plays (no help defender then no kick 3 or blocking foul on a lay up).

The defense wasn't as good in the second half and there was a lapse in the no 3s defense by white. But by and by this was one of the best defensive efforts iowa has had under mccaffery.

I don't know a single coach that wouldn't employ that defensive strategy at the end of the game. We just have a little to gain in our execution of it. One major thing would be not fouling the lay up but I have a feeling white knew better and won't do it again.

The problem with that is playing that way was virtually the only way we could lose. We were up with 12 with six min left. Taking the air out of the ball meant the only way we could lose is if we went ice cold from the line and Wisky hit everything. One of those two happened and we won fairly comfortably.

Speaking of free throws, was anybody else a little nervous every time they passed the ball to Clemmons? He hit a couple of clutch free throws at the end.

I certainly was as the announcers kept emphasizing that he was the worst FT shooter on the floor at the time. His stroke looked pretty solid though. I think he will improve his % as the year goes on.

I echo that. I was proud of the kid for hitting em. I think he'll get alot better at them too. There's no reason he couldn't shoot 75% or better. He's got a pretty decent pull up 18 footer too. As far as playing not to lose I hate the ole defense and taking the air out of the ball on O with a ton of time left. I felt that if they kept their foot on the gas they woulda fouled out Evans and their big guy sooner then they did and deflated them. They were in foul trouble from the git go. If the lead is 12-14 with less then 3 mins left then ok burn clock and defend the 3 ball. But not with 6 mins left that's an eternity. However I'm nit picking the biggest W of the year so far when it was obvious emotion and adrenaline had a big part in this. Huge win hope they can build off of it

Yeah, they looked really good and I wonder if that is why Fran had him on the court. Perhaps he has been stroking them in practice as well.

White was actually in a great position to make the block but he didn't get it done. I don't think you can get on him for making a mental mistake there, it was more of a physical one. Fran basically said the same thing in the post game.

Seriously? We ****** away a 20 point lead? We led by 16 at half, hardly much of a diff.

I understand he was in good position, but it still isn't smart to go for the block when your defense is predicated on not giving up 3s and 3 pt plays. I get what mccaffery said about it being a physical mistake but I guarantee they will address the problem and try to coach that physical mistake out of him.

Like I said great defensive game. And really only the one lapse at the end. Considering these are college kids only one mistake in that pressure packed situation is really good.

It's a fine line between making sure you don't foul and just giving up an easy bucket. White did cross that line but at least it was on a play that he makes most of the time. And like you said, it was pretty good to only have one mistake.

You can slice it up how you want strategically but if we don't improve that we will blow a lead - we about did last night.

We played great defense for most of the night and then decided to play soft at the end of the game and be passive. The result was we about lost the game.

I'm not saying be dumb and foul - but pressure them a bit - make them take some time bringing the ball up the court.

Over and over - we let them get across half court and score in less than 5 seconds.

Whatever kind of excuses you want to throw out doesn't excuse that.

There is a way to play defense that is smart but tough at the end of the game and this team needs to learn.

I thought it was odd we didn't press at the end (last 1:20), thus making wisky burn some precious time getting up the court.

I think we can have our wing defenders be 3 feet farther off their man and then they can help cut off the drive from the ballhandler at the top of the circle. The wing defender's main responsibility is the to wing he is guarding but they should be able to help stop that quick drive for two.

While we didn't throw away a big lead, there was a let-down in the last 2 minutes of the first half. The momentum hadn't changed to Wisconsin's favor, but Iowa had lost some. Had Wisky got the 3 pointer off before the buzzer, Wisconsin would have most certainly went into the half with some energy.
