We need to stop obsessing about Pearl

If that were to happen, great. But the odds are much greater that it won't, and I'd hate to see a meltdown to the detriment of some other good candidate if and when Pearl says no.

Bruce pearl will never coach at iowa. Why leave a good thing at tenn to coach at iowa, where it may take years to get this program back to where it needs to be? i think we are now the NW of the 80's. And look NW won at least 18 games for the first time in school history.

I don't think anyone is obsessing. I think people are letting it be known who they want. Nothing wrong with that. Would you rather they say that they want Dana Altman? Or Ben Jacobson? No offense to those two, but we've been down this "mid-major" road the last two hires and it hasn't worked out.

Pearl was more interested the 1st time around than most people realize. He'll be interested again this time around. Does that mean he'll come? No, but it doesn't mean he won't either.

If Iowa decides to make a change, Pearl is my #1. But I would still put the chances of landing him at best around 25%.

What are the odds of landing Gary Close? is that his name? He is assistant at Wisky, and he was here at Iowa for a little bit wasn't he?

I have heard that name a lot around Iowa City lately, does anyone know anything about him?

Obsessing is our thing, right? Seriously, I have zero expectations that we could get him,anyway...like last time...give him a call..then quickly move on to realistic candidates. Check in with Jamie Dixon of Pitt, rumored to be on DePauls wishlist..cover your bases.

two days ago I sent a buddy of mine a text message that if we were to land pearl I would send him a pretty disturbing picture of Pearl's name being spelled out (not going into details). Now... I am beginning to have some optimism that this could be a possibility. I agree with Jon it is about 25%, but I was thinking more like 1% a couple days ago.

I'll admit that I'm obsessing about Pearl, but I also realize that there's a very good chance that he won't be our next coach. There are other candidates out there that would excite me just as much, or almost as much.

Whether it's Pearl, Scott Drew, Kevin Stallings, or whoever, it's just that I'd prefer to set my sights a little bit higher than wishing for Dana Altman or Kirk Speraw.

Need to come up with $7,000,000.00 for the first season
2 buyouts totaling $5,000,000.00, and $2 million minimum in salary and could be more.

That is a lot of $$.

I am assuming the arrows are pointing to my post. so why are my comments false?

NW lost 20 games or more 4 times in the 1980's. In addition they lost 18 games twice and 19 games twice. They had one winning season in the entire decade in 1982. Until that season they hadn't had a winning season since the 1968 season and they wouldn't have another won for another 11 years (93-94).

I don't think the two programs are remotely comparable.

Is there something written into Pearl's contract that says we have to pay Tennessee the remainder of Pearl's contract if he takes a job here?

When Alford left, I don't remember hearing anything about UNM paying us anything for Alford's buyout. I thought it was just a clean break?

I guess I just don't understand the buyout thing. I thought buyouts were for coaches who get canned. Can someone explain this?

I'm in this same camp.

Do you know that Pearl's "guarateed" salary will never make more than Pat Summit (the women's coach)? It is in her contract that she has to be paid more. That may not sit to well with him.

I think most agree (including Pearl) that Pat has earned her salary as well as the contract language that spells out she must be the highest paid basketball coach at Tenn.

Secondly are you sure that is true? I can remember reading Pat Summit's salary is in the 1.5 million range and I'm pretty sure Pearl makes around 2.5

Pearl makes more on the shoe contracts and camp moneys that are not part of the guaranteed money. On the base contract as of 2008 season Summitt was still higher paid. So his overall compensation is higher but that is from the shoe company primarily.

The university has clauses in the contract that if Pearl were to leave, the school he is going to would have to pay Tenn. X$$. School's with good coaches want to put in those poison pills so they don't have to renegotiate salaries year after year every time a school comes calling. Actually I think with Pearl the buyout was 2.5 million year 1 of the new contract and then goes down. 2.5 year 1 , 2.0 year 2, 1.5 year 3 and 1.0 year 4.

With Alford, I thought Iowa felt they were overpaying the guy and were just looking to get out of a bad contract. New Mexico says we will take him. Alford wanted out, Iowa wanted out of Alfords contract one of those rare "win win" situations.
