We all think Iowa was pass crazy in 2004

I know I did...just looking at some stats tonight...Vandenberg is on pace to throw 373 times this year. That would be the 4th highest passing attempts by a QB in a season in Iowa history.

2004? Tate had 375 attempts. By the way, in 2005 and 2006 Tate threw the ball 352 times. Stanzi threw it 345 times last year. Jake threw it 270 times in 2007.

So, did Iowa really go pass crazy in 2004?

Tate threw the ball the exact same amount of times in '05 and '06!?

You think the coaching staff planned that out? :D

Neat stat. Thanks for sharing, Jon.

Yes, exact same number..had no idea until digging through some stats tonight..also had forgotten that Ricky went over 3,000 passing yards last year...3,004. First Iowa QB to do that since Hartlieb in 1987...span of 23 years.

Matt Rodgers was last Iowa QB drafted before Ricky...but he never threw for more than 15 TD in a season and never more than 2275 passing yards in a season...get this, Jake Christensen threw for more yards in 2007 than two of Rodgers three years as a starter, and his 17 TD passes that year were more than Rodgers ever threw. Would not have believed that.

How many did Matt Rodgers score rushing? I remember Hayden went to the QB sneak a ton with Rodgers near the goal line.

Need yards per attempt and yards per completion to properly compute the "pass happy vs pass crazy ratio"

Thanks in advance JDM

Stanzi had more yards per attempt and completion last year than 2004 Tate, and Vandenberg is on pace for more as well.

Iowa has quietly become one of the better QB schools in the Big Ten. I'm trying to think of a school that has produced three better passers in the last 8 years than Tate, Stanzi, and JVB. Northwestern definitely has. Who else?

Purdue ain't bad.

You can't count Robinson in this.

Why were counting Northwestern's ****** armed QB's

Nevermind, I read it as QB's not passers. Still you can't count Northwestern's QB's either.

I still stand by the Michigan State examples though.

We had an 11 game regular season in 2004 and will play 12 regular season games this year. Not sure if Jon considered that. Would be more interesting to see the passes attempted per game.

It wasn't that we went pass crazy, it was that we had zero running game and the passing game had to BE the offense.

I keep reading over and over and over again that Tate was the hero of 2004. I give a huge amount of the credit to the D and Kyle Schlicher for our successes that season.

I think "The Play" against LSU has completely changed how we remember that season.

In 2004:

Pass Attempts per game - 32.1
Rush Attempts per game - 35.7

Pass Yards per game - 240.1
Rush Yards per game - 72.6

This year:

Pass Attempts per game - 29.7
Rush Attempts per game - 34.7

Pass Yards per game - 253
Rush Yards per game - 143.4

Good catch, and no I did not. So I guess take the numbers for what you will ;)

we really did not pass that much more in 2004. i lost this argument 3-4 years ago and the numbers surprised me. it probably seems like we passed more because throwing the ball was so much more effective that year.
