Watching the Orange Bowl again...

This is the first chance I've really had to watch the Orange Bowl again and a couple things have stuck out to me. This may be "old news" or something that has already been posted, so I apologize in advance if that's the case.

* Where has that bunch set on offense been all season? I really like that look.
.........................Y....T..G..C..G..T......................X
......................Z.....F........Q

.......................................H

* Clayborn is a beast. That is all.

* There is a youth defense called a GAM (Gap - Air - Mirror) where a variation is that the defense's formation mimics the offensive formation. If you happen to take a look at our defense on many plays, we've got our down lineman in their 5,3,1,5 techniques, but then our OLB's look like GT's A backs and our Mike is at about the same depth as Dwyer, head up over center. Not nearly as simplistic as the youth GAM, but I thought the similarities were interesting...

* Sandeman's drop in the 3rd quarter was big. We got a FG out of the drive, but that drive was after GT took the opening kick in the 3rd quarter and went on a long drive (even though they missed the FG). Sure would have made me feel better to have a 1st and Goal from the 7 as opposed to lining up for a 33 yard FG attempt.

* KOK should probably be publicly flogged for not finding ways to get the ball to Tony Moeaki more this season. The guy clearly has a ton of athletic ability, and he showed that on a couple of occasions; allowing him to virtually disappear from our offensive gameplan for entire games this year is inexplicable.

* Tarp had a couple of big hits on kickoff coverage...he wasn't just making tackles, he was delivering blows.

* While Clayborn got a lot of the headlines for the defense, Karl Klug most definitely deserves some mention. He played extremely well on the interior line.

I've only watched the first 3 quarters; 4th quarter yet to come. Those are just a few things that stood out to me.

Get off of KOK...he's not on the field distributing the ball or running routes and the defenses MAY have had something to do with Tony's open-ness in certain situations...do the bashers ALWAYS have to find something, no matter what, to b!tch about when it comes to KOK? I mean, EVERY time?

I don't want to turn this into a KOK-bashfest; I realize that he's not out there making throws or running routes. That wasn't the intent of my bullet point in the OP. I'm looking at it from a more analytical point of view...I'm not insisting on forcing the ball to him several times a game...there are plays/formations you can run that dictate/limit the defense in what they can do.

My main point is that Moeaki was a forgotten man in the passing game for most of the season, and that's a shame given his abilities and athleticism. It's a little more difficult to take away a good TE from an offense than a WR because you open yourself up to so much more if you try to double/bracket a TE to take him out of the game. I think it's unfortunate that we didn't introduce or re-introduce more into the offense to get him involved.

Sorry 2679...I must've read too much into it. My apologies.:)

I'm with you Shane. Here Iowa is, the OB winner, a BCS bowl winner, first 'BCS' win since '59, and already people negative about KOK. Regarding TM, who knows the reason for his dropoff after Michigan. Perhaps the opposition watched game film in preparation for Iowa and decided to take him out of Iowa's offense? No, probably KOK too dumb to throw to him.

Timeout Situation:

Ricky: Ken, Tony's open ALL THE TIME!

KOK: I know Rick, but we're gonna hit DJK in double coverage instead! If that's not there, look for Marvin on the curl with the defender in front of him! Go get'em guys!

Tarpinian made every single kickoff tackle. All 5 I believe. That's impressive.

You're correct...and I believe 4 of the 5 were solos.

Edit: I wish I'd paid more attention to him during the entire season because now I'm wondering if anyone's ever been drafted just because of their special teams coverage...dude's an animal!

Agree...........Jeff Tarpinian was a MAN-imal all night in the Orange Bowl and that bodes very well for the LEO spot, next year. Hunter, Tarp & Nielsen, or Bruce Davis, or perhaps even James Morris.

What a luxury for that LB group, playing behind the BEST Front Four in America, as well as in combination with Sash, Greenway, Prater and maybe Hyde or Bernstine. As good as our Defense is this year, there is a chance it could be just as good, next season.

Go HAWKS! :)

All of you people that defend KoK because of the awesome season we have do realize that it is possible to have an awesome season IN SPITE of someone rather than because of them right? He is easily the weakest link and if we were able to have even a minor upgrade in that area we probably will have made a few more Rose Bowls in the past 10 years.

Have you heard the head coach comment about KOK? Have you heard the head coach comment about the OL coach, when he was similarly 'under fire' a couple years back?

Do you think KF is more of an offensive coach, or a defensive coach?

What does your answer tell you about our offense?

Does KOK run the same offense that won his school a national championship, when he was at that school? Or did it change when he became the OC at Iowa? Why is that?

I watch it again every few days or parts of it. The HD picture and theblack and gold domination is a beautiful thing

What kind of offense did KOK run when he was head coach? And was it his offense, or his Offensive Coordinators? Serious question, btw. I would appreciate details if you have them. Thanks.

Wasn't Moeki out part of the season again this year? It is hard to develop consistency with a TE who has all the ability, but only played about one full season in all the years he was here!

I'll stand by my initial response to Shane.

It's funny that you say that Jon. I was also just watching this game again today and remarked again to my husband about how good the Hawks look in their black... So glad they got to wear the home jerseys. It must have been the lighting in the stadium. I am sure it looks a million times better in HD, but it still looks damn good on my 20 year old Sony! Maybe the black was too intimidating to the muted yellow jackets.

Iowa's TE's were asked to stay on the line and block more for the QB. Iowa faced many multi-fronted defenses and blitzes this year disrupting the QB play and Iowa needed and used full protection. It will help having some seasoned running backs in the stable next year and our receivers will be improved as well.
