And be honest with this, did you (even the most optimistic of us) ever think that Gary Barta had a realistic chance of landing Bruce Pearl.

Personally, I think the answer to that question is no, but that Barta may have had to ask just satisfy the fans/boosters.

As of today on the Gazette blog, Hlas & others still provide that there's a chance, albeit a 2% chance according to one of them, even as of now to hire Pearl. We just won't hear more because he's still in the dance like other coaches I would like to have interviewed.
