Was anyone watching the Tigers vs Sox game?

At the beginning of the game Cabrera got into the box(third batter of the game) and noticed that the batters box was too far forward. The ump had the grounds crew come in and change it.

1. Sox fans are dumb as they were boooing this.

2. I think this was on purpose.

3. How many times have they done this?

4. Should the MLB do something about this?

One of the first things a batter does is rub out the back line of the batters box. It allows them to see the ball just a little longer. In all the years of watching baseball, (yes I remember Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese), I've only seen the umpire stop this practice once!

Relax. It was a one time occurance, and was almost immediately noticed by Cabrera.
Sox fans were booing because they thought Miggy was pulling some gamesmanship, not like they could be expected to know about the legitmacy of the complaint.

Roger Bossard is the most respected groundskeeper in MLB and has done the fields at many of the parks, including Wrigley and Fenway....MLB is not gonna do a thing.

Sour grapes...Sox Win!!

+1.

If you think this was shady, you don't know anything about Roger Bossard.

Baseball is loaded with more myths and superstitions than any other sport. (and that's why some love it). There's no better example than the above.

A 90 mile/hour pitch is moving at 132 ft/second. Even if the batter were to gain an entire foot...which he's not... that would give him less than 1/100th of a second in additional time. Not significant in human terms. It's all psychological.

How do you know its never happened before? It had nothing to do with the outcome of the game thats not my complaint.

The box was almost a full foot forward. So either that guy was drunk, had someone do the box and didnt look at it, or is just an idiot, or it could have been done on purpose. If you dont think it was done on purpose then that grounds crew sucks.

The rule is three feet in front of home plate and three feet behind home plate. Now if its off by a foot you should notice.

This is dumb. Every single batter goes to the same spot in the box every at bat. It makes a big difference. I dont know if your just a band guy or if you play any sports but try having you feet a half a foot more together in your golf swing and see how you do.

1. Not fair to single out Sox fans on this one. Any teams' fans would have been booing this. Especially during the home opener vs a divisional rival.

2. That's fine, be paranoid.

3. Impossible to tell as a fan. There is no other evidence of this and nobody has come forward (at least publicly) complaining about it.

4. Until other players, managers or umpires come forward with evidence then no, no action should be taken.

Here is the video of what happened (it might not take you right to it, but you can click on the video at the bottom of the page):

True I think most fans would boo. Not being paranoid I just think you have to be really dumb to screw up a batters box when its your job. I think the MLB should just pay more attention to this now.

Room for your stance...absolutely. It's critical. If I could fix my golf stance, I might be able to hit the ball more consistently.

That wasn't the point. (you may want to reflect on your "dumb" comment...literally)

It was the idea that getting 1/100th of a second more to see the ball would make a difference.

My golf stance sucks but if I was to play everyday then it would be a huge deal.

How long do you get when a pitcher is throwing 96mph? 1/100th of a second would be a big deal. Maybe it wouldnt be a big deal if you had 2 seconds to see the pitch coming.

Sounds like you and I would spend a lot of time looking for our balls in the woods. (wait, that doesn't sound right).

For sure, batters have to make split second, almost subconscious, decisions on a pitch. But <1/100th of a second is way faster than any reflex time humanly relevant.

I think your point that it's more about stance and digging in, is right. And the "belief" that they're getting longer to see the ball.

My thought is being a foot forward would cause more foul balls. Just like in golf when you put the ball back or forward in your stance to get different movement or to hit a ball higher or lower. I dont think it would change whether or not the batter would swing.

I agree that it was a huge embarrassment for Bossard and the sox goundskeepers. I suspect someone might even be fired or suspended for this. Opening day of all days,it was inexcusable, but not a conspiracy. I am sure that the Sox apologized to the Tiger management for this. Dombroski used to work for the Sox and is friends with Williams and Sox management,so no big deal. A blip, but an embarrassing one,no doubt. The last thing that the Sox wanted to do was shut Peavy down on the mound for ten minutes after he was warmed up,and hiss off a huge sellout home opener crowd...not good.

Well Peavy wasnt having it as he was solid. I am a Tigers fan but I think a lot of people would agree that the Tigers have a great lineup. Peavy made some good hitters look silly. No one has come close this year to pitching Cabrera and Fielder like he did.

If the mound was at 55 ft it would be a hell of a lot harder for hitters. There is a difference between standing in the middle of the batter's box and the back of it.

Funny aside - Cabrera went 0-12 in the series after getting the batter's box fixed. I don't think it means anything, but it was pointed out in the Comcast story from Sunday's Tigers-Sox game.
