VOTE: In a stellar year for Iowa coaches, who gets coach of the year title?

Oooh, now that's a tough one TK....rowing? Hmm....I'm going with Heller.....I'm a baseball guy

I don't know too much about it, but it kinda looks like the track & field coach deserves the honor.

Track coach has done pretty well for a sport that probably gets swept under the rug, for the most part. The sprints and sprint relays are usually competitive, and there always seems to be one or two field events where Hawk athletes are top/near-top of B1G, and will often place at NCAAs. And when the Hawks won the B1G Championship--at the home track (yes, "home track" is an advantage)--opposing coaches had noted that the Hawks were strong "across the board" in field events and had athletes in a ton of "finals".

Rare, though, is sustained dominance. I think they are getting stronger, but northern schools will rarely, if ever, be a track hotbed. Just look at the finals for almost all the running events and relays. B1G has a few entrants scattered throughout, and I think may have had a champ or two. But by and large, look south for the champions and most of the finalists.

Hayden Fry once complained that the Hawks having a poor track & field program accounted for the football program not being able to recruit as much speed. Then, someone pointed out that (at that time) Miami/FL didn't have a track/field program. And that was that!
