Very good win, is this a better power blocking Oline?

It was a very good win, I cant say great because Nebby is 4-8. But Nebby can score points and the hawk defense basically held them to 7 points. The Nebby defense isnt good but that was overpowering with some good passing involved.

Any offensive line coaching or scouting gurus out there who can describe Iowa's blocking today? I know some about line blocking and it seemed that Iowa mainly went with straight ahead blocking especially in the 2nd half. There were a few wide runs in the first half using outside zone blocking rather than pulling linemen and those plays did not really work well. The straight ahead power blocking just demoralized Nebby and pushed them back 5 to 7 yards.

Maybe this Oline doesnt block the wide sweeps that well.

Any commentary appreciated.

I'd love to be able to go back and break down our rushing plays by play type (zone, counter, power, etc) to see where we excelled. But since I don't have time to do that...

First rushing TD - Modified power play (usually power is FB kick, BSG lead thru) - Nebraska actually did a decent job wrong arming Welsh (meaning he tried spilling it to the outside to where his help was), but playside seal was good (pretty sure they missed a false start on Alaric Jackson too) and Wadley running over Wieting actually helped the Nebraska defenders run right by.

Second rushing TD - Goal line power play...big boy football. Nothing fancy here...Kulick with the kick, Render pulls around and annihilates the Neb defender in the hole (seriously...take a look...he was trying to slide off Fant's block and got crushed). Wadley meets defender at the goal line but is not to be deterred.

Third rushing TD - Lead slant play. I'm calling it "slant" because a hundred years ago I went to the Iowa high school football coaches clinic and that was one of the concepts they went over and this looks remotely close. Everyone steps playside, the C and BSG drive the 1 technique to the backside LB, leave the FB on the Mike LB, and the LT/TE combo DE to S (don't worry about the CB because this play is hitting inside). Daniels and Welsh get the kudos on this play because they reset the LOS several yards downfield almost immediately...honorable mention to Ross for standing up the Neb MLB.

Fourth rushing TD - This looks like Iowa's pin and pull scheme. Notice Fant down blocks (or at worst man-on blocks) and Jackson and Render look for first color outside of him...this is an outside zone concept and you are trying to create flow in the defense to create cutback lanes in...perfect for a runner like Wadley. Sure enough, he hits one of those lanes, makes a safety miss in the hole and almost seems surprised there isn't more resistance heading into the end zone.

Fifth rushing TD - Outside zone...Welsh trying to get a cut block on backside pursuit. Fant taking deep bucket step to allow rush to come up field to better his seal angle. Young finds a nice crease and moves in untouched.

Prior to sixth rushing TD (Long run by IKM) - Looks like the same slant play as the third TD. BSG/C double to backside LB, FB takes Mike LB, seal on the backside by Wirfs is solid.

Sixth rushing TD - Looks like zone lead to me...created a crease on the play side and led the FB on first color in the hole...nice assist by a host of OL to get IKM the extra half yard for the score.

One more run I looked at was the big Wadley run coming out of the end zone on the first (?) possession. It looks exactly like the slant play referenced earlier except there was a run fit bust on Nebraska's defense. I think the Mike LB jumped into the A gap and should have been in the B gap where he would have met the FB and the hole would have been considerably smaller (meaning the safety wouldn't have gotten juked out of his jock by Wadley). Nebraska shifted late on this play and it would appear as though the Mike missed his assignment.

I started to get confused.

Must’ve been because there were so many rushing TDs.

But thanks for the XnO description

Good call DDThompson...

Super descriptions and it looks like a lot of power runs rather than more sideways stretch.

On that first TD it is just great to watch Weiting #39 take out one guy and quickly bounce to his feet and take out another Lbkr or Dback.

Here is what happened. Nebraska is absolutely awful, and they gave up at halftime. Lost there nose tackle and linebacker as well. Thats the reason for our success in a nutshell. They have given up yards and points like candy all year to everyone. We didn't all of a sudden figure things out on offense. Mighty MN hung 54 on them, thats how bad they are.

Couldn't have said it any better

You are going to make a lot of people very angry with this post. You actually know something about football. Bad decision on your part, but, hey, Thanks!

Wow hawkfan2679. Do you have twitter?
Yes sir...not much of a Twitter-er though; I mostly just follow individuals and occasionally retweet something. But this level of detail is the stuff that I enjoy diving into and if someone else gets a kick out of it on this message board, that's great.

Who? It was a great post, and there was a LOT more power o in those plays than I normally see. Love the follow up with YouTube.

Anybody know the last time Iowa had 6 rushing TDs on the road?

What I liked about the offense is that even though they made some mistakes in the beginning, you could see they were determined to move the ball. They had a different attitude.
