Vanilla defense becoming more flavorful?

For chrissakes Homer - Sandeman and Nordman could have a lifetime of extra reps and never approach the level of playmaking and talent that DJK brought to this game. I always liked your posts but your last statement comes off as a real horse's @ss. It's no surprise "chad" agrees with it.

PJHawk -

You don't have to agree with me on the issue of DJK.

In fact, as eveybody knows, I'm a huge recruiting junkie too. Thus, I WANTED DJK to land at Iowa from the outset ... I recognized him early on as a huge possible get for Iowa. However, I wrote off our chances because I knew how badly he wanted to play for tOSU.

I thus was stoked when Iowa landed DJK.

The reason why I sound like a "horses a$$" is because I really want the best for our team. I totally understand that kids can be dumb and that kids can make mistakes. In fact, many folks point out Ballard's failed drug test and try to paint him as a "bad" Hawkeye. However, from my vantage, everything I've ever heard about Ballard in our program has been pretty darn good. He earned pretty high praise for being really coachable and for working really hard, both for himself and for the team. Thus, if he casually used drugs on occasion ... then so be it. The problem with DJK is that his "issues" went WAY PAST any casual drug use. He was a DIVISIVE force on the team. That really rubs me the wrong way.

Of course, through the early part of the '10 season, quite surprisingly most of the word coming out about DJK was pretty positive. Comments made by the coaches basically saying that he was finally practicing like a SR. However, DJK didn't keep it up. Yet again his antics took a turn for the worse in the latter part of the season .... and, not coincidentally, the team played more poorly too.

Lastly, what you say about Sandeman is OFF. Folks close to Stanzi tipped me off about both Marvin and Sandeman. Both from what I've heard and what I've seen ... Sandeman is MUCH better than you're giving him credit. The problem with Colin was that he got hit by injuries ... AND, his confidence took a bit of a hit in the latter part of his FR year too. Anyhow, while Sandeman may not have been as "talented" as DJK ... he was still a VERY good player.

Furthermore, I don't think that you'd dispute that Keenan Davis is also a pretty special player. If DJK weren't getting the reps, then Keenan would have gotten more reps.
