Uthoff 2 years later

Since everyone is talking about the Lebron decision to go back to the Cavs I thought it'd be interesting to look back at the Uthoff decision to come back to Iowa and see how people see him finishing out his career as a Hawk.

I think he's the most talented player on the team (probably a tie between Uthoff and Olaseni). White is most likely the best player on the team but Uthoff has a higher level of potential and a much smoother stroke from the outside than White.

Does Uthoff finish out his career as an All-B1G player? Player of the Year? Leading scorer for the Hawkeyes? Admittedly I was disappointed in how the season unfolded for Uthoff last year. You could see the talent but I think the substitution patterns really unnerved him in addition to the physicality of the Big Ten. That should change moving forward

Going back to Uthoff's decision to come to Iowa it strikes me as very lucky he didn't go to some of the other schools he was considering that affect Iowa. Iowa State would have been very dangerous with Uthoff in the lineup. Creighton also would have been really tough last year. Can you imagine Wisconsin if they still had Uthoff? They're already a Top 5 team next year. But would Hayes have been at Wisconsin had Uthoff stayed? Interesting dynamics.

I think Uthoff has a unique situation. I think nearly everybody agrees the potential is there.

Where opinions begin to differ is what to do with him. I'm of the opinion that I want him to improve his handles, continue to develop his outside shot and become more aggressive. I see him as a 3 much more than a 4.

I think when all is said and done Uthoff will have a terrific senior year and live up to the potential but if he doesn't i think he will become a target for fans frustration due to not living up to the potential.

iba, I agree that JU's game is much more suited for the 3 than the 4. JU will never be able to gain the weight needed to be successful at the 4. And I agree with your assessment in that JU needs to work on his handles and aggressiveness; though, I think his handles are pretty good right now. Where he seemed to get into trouble was when he picked up his dribble and he wasn't strong enough to not get the ball stripped out of his hands. I think this kid will be money.

Linesetter, I believe that Peter Jok will be a star, if not a superstar. A lot of people disagree with that and (probably) rightly so, as he didn't play much last season. But I saw a player that was "thinking" and not reacting, at times. But, when he was in the flow...his first step off the dribble is unguardable and his PTL highlights are showing he is a high end 3 pnt shooter. Being a plus 3 pnt shooter and a deadly first step off the dribble is a recipe for disaster for opponents.

This years team has so much potential that if 75% comes to fruition, we're a 25 game winning team. If Woody, White (plus mid-range jumper), JU and PJ score live I believe they've shown they can, and if Gabe, MG and Dom Uhl are effective scores by shooting a good %, then we could be 75 ppg in the B1G. But, we could also be 65 ppg if these players don't take the next step forward.

I think we all need to remember (I know I have to keep reminding myself of this) that last season was JU's 1) first full season of competitive hoops since his SR year in high school, 2) had an adjustment period of D1 level hoops. I firmly believe he or Jok, or both, will be our star(s) next season.

I think Uthoffs potential had a big part in why Wisky didn't want to let him go too bad. Did Fran put a list out of schools that Ingram couldn't go to? The amount of schools on that list still just annoyed the crap out of me. I think Uthoff if he doesn't gain 10 more pounds will be a pretty darn good player the next two years. I think he'll be Iowas leading scorer. He'll get the PT and touches and have the green light to shoot. (I'm not so sold that Whites game will improve enough to be a game in game out 15-17 pt a game guy) How good he'll become I think is tied directly to if he can put on alittle muscle. 10-15 more lbs would just make a world of difference to his game.

Don’t forget he was one of the top 6th men in the country until about February. If he continues to get stronger, he could be a heck of a stretch 4.

Uthoff would have to put on 30 lbs to be listed as a 4. He's closer to a 2 with his skills then a 4. To me he's a 3. If he's guarding the other teams 4s we better be in a zone or we'll be in trouble. He can get backed down by any other teams 4 man. It is tough to shoot over the top of him though. He's got go go gadget arms.
