UTEP AD talks about Barbee and Iowa job

Barta should pick up that phone now ... I think Barbee would be the best candidate out of the three former MSU assistants ... The Utah coach does not impress me at all

Well, this is disappointing. Appears Barta hasn't even talked to him which means he may have never been on Barta's "list." I guess Barta is more interested in this Boylen guy from Utah that just finished a 14-17 season in MWC I'm hearing strong truth to. But given Iowa's most recent record I guess a 14-17 season looks impressive and familiar...

UTEP athletics director talks about Tony Barbee, Iowa | GazetteOnline.com

Sheesh. I was excited by the prospect of bringing in a young, energetic winner. Combined with Jon's recent post that we may be looking at three former MSU assistants this is just damned depressing.

Just edited my signature to remove ABK!, which stood for Anybody But Keno (or Knight, take your pick). At this point I'd take either one.

If Barta never even contacted him, then Barta needs to be evaluated on whether he is fit to be running this athletic program. I'm not saying Barbee needs to be the guy hired, but how can you ignore what he has done? Especially with the less than stellar names coming out of this process that Barta is apparently interested in. I know we aren't going to get a big splash like Pearl, but some also ran that nobody has ever heard of will not do anything to ressurrect this program.

I still think his guy is still in the tourny...I just have a hunch Pearl is not done yet. I know just a hunch...but I believe it.

Barta may not have interviewed him but it doesn't mean Barta or someone hasn't contacted his agent to see what type of interest there may be.

This. To have a guy that has quickly turned around UTEP and is a strong recruiter.. To net even LOOK at the guy.. Unforgiveable.

BUT.. This is a bunch of "He said or he heard" type of stuff. So I am at least attempting to take everything with a grain of salt.

How do you know that 3rd parties representing each side haven't contacted one another? A coach will interview before permission is asked, once a coach accepts then the permission is asked and usually granted.

So if you hear Iowa has asked for permission to speak to so and so that means that there is probably a 95% chance that so and so will be the coach within a couple of days. You don't ask for permission and then get denied, it doesn't look good.

I don't KNOW. I'm saying that *IF* Barta isn't even considering Barbee, then I think that's crazy. As I said, I'm trying to take everything with a grain of salt. It's easy to be led astray by rumors, as we all should hopefully know by now.

I guess we didn't hear anything Barta talking to Lickliter from what I recall, and BAM - he's our coach.

Exactly and the AD thing is just a courtesy...not required.

Or he could be talking to someone who needs no approval to talk, i.e. Gottfried, Lavin, Lappas, or someone still playing in the NIT or NCAA; i.e. Cornell, Baylor, Duke (God forbid), TN. etc.
