Unrealistic?

Is it unrealistic to think that Iowa could go 5-4 in the first half of the B1G season?

Just curious what everyone else thinks. I'll give my thoughts later .. ..

GO HAWKS!!!

Yes, it is. It's gonna be tough to win in Ann Arbor and that already drops us to 0-2. Doubt we go 5-2 after that. Hope I'm wrong though.

Thats how I predicted the Hawks to start in the B1G prediction thread I believe. That would be 5-4.

Stop being so optimistic, it will cause a meltdown and people will want Fran fired, Iowa isn't fundamentally good enough...:p

It isn't, but won't be easy. The MSU game becomes very big in this.

In thinking about it, this is what I see happening as well. There are 3 games that I think are going to be very tough to win. (@ Mich, @ OSU, @ Minn) If the Hawks can steal one of these (a tall order, I know), it would really help.

But the rest of the games are VERY winnable with the MSU game being the toughest. It would make for a great start for a team most ‘experts’ were/are predicting to be a year away. Heck .. .. even 4-5 would be a good start.

GO HAWKS!!!

The game I could see the Hawks stealing is at OSU. There is a slim to none chance they win in Ann Arbor or Minneapolis.

You get through the first half and the Hawks are done playing Michigan, MSU and OSU. Also have 2 games against Nebraska in the 2nd half of the year.

Winning at Minnesota, OSU or Michigan is so remote...

that you have to mark those down as losses. Of course winning those games changes the entire way the season is viewed, but no one is winning at any of those venues except the other elite teams in the conference. And MSU went on the road and got drilled by Minnesota.

The rest of the games are winnable, but they are also loseable, with the possible exception of the home game against Penn State. If Iowa can't beat Penn State in Iowa City, we aren't going to the NCAA tournament. Winning both at Northwestern and at Purdue will be very difficult. Iowa has yet to play well at all in Fran's first 2 years against Northwestern's zone defense, and Purdue is not a bad team despite their 7-6 record. Boilers have a couple bad losses, but they are also capable of beating good teams, with wins at Clemson and at home over Illinois. If Hawks manage to go 4-5 over their first 9 games, I will be ecstatic. Second 9 is still difficult, but only one road game in the "near-impossible" category (Indiana).

Not impossible at all. Figure out how to make 3's at a reasonable level, stop guard penetration and stop other bigs. Actually figure out one of them and sort of do another and it's very possible.

Problem is that several of the not so good teams in that mix are very well coached even if the talent is down or not there. No way a win at OSU. Against 3 of those teams it's not just our weakness on doing some fundamentals correctly, it's about talent and fundamentals.

When we start beating those teams half of the time at home and some on the road...we are back. Depending on the definition you have.

OSU is more beatable this year than they have been in the past 5 or 6 years. If Thomas isnt making shots, they will sturggle.

Minny and Michigan are much better teams than OSU right now.

I think 5-4 is the absolute best case scenario....and probably not likely. Even tho PU and NW look like very limited teams offensively right now, they are looking at Iowa (shooting like blind men) and see the same with Iowa. We probably lose at least one of those, even tho we should not.
Beating MSU in Carver is a must, but will be hard.
Beating Wisky is never easy.

I will take 4-5 and consider us still alive in the hunt for that 7th Dance Bid out of the Big Ten.
