This is the dumbest Iowa City Ordinance on the books. Now a bunch of nancies are going to blow this out of proportion until Wirfs sounds like Charlie Manson. He did nothing wrong. And Officer Reinhard should have his gnads kicked in. And the hypocrisy of this is; IC police are instructed now not to arrest for under an ounce of marijuana, but be in a bar after 10 under 21 and you are going down buddy.

This is so dumb. Just make him leave the bar. Taking him to jail just because he was there? Wow. It's not like he was drunk or in possession of alcohol. This isn't worthy of a suspension.

He wasn't taken to jail. It says "N" under Jailed....meaning, he was not taken to jail....just cited.

Correct, but don't be surprised if Kirk gives him a one game.

Not to get all political here, but in the past 20-ish years, there has been a massive shift in government using piddly violations like this as stealth taxes against the young and poor. I got a PAULA in 1998 right before I turned 21. It was a $15 fine, plus like $30 of court costs. If you get one now, the first offense is $200, with close to $100 court costs last I heard. Second offense is a $500 fine AND they can take your license. Look, I get it that they don't want kids to drink, but my god, how big of a stick do you have to have up your ass to give a kid a $500 ticket and take away his license for having a couple of cans of Meisterbrau?

The ICPD employing the lowest hanging fruit aspect of police work. Nice job guys. The citizens of Iowa Ciry can sleep more safely tonight. I’d love to see the data that supports this ordinance supporting any pubic good (other than filling city coffers).

That ordinance can’t be constitutional. Just no one wants to bother challenging it.

I got busted 7 times for underaged drinking (5 of them after turning 20). The 7th one cost the same as the 1st. A grand total of $34.50.

The ordinance is, but I'm not sure the manner in which it is enforced is unless they start giving people different color wrist bands now or something that makes minors easy to identify. It used to be the cops would just roll in to a bar like 3 deep and start asking people for ID with no showing of reasonable suspicion or probable cause.

Are there any repercussions to the businesses? That's a semi-rhetorical question, because I'm sure there isn't. Pounce on the kids who are allowed in the place, having a good time, time gets away from them, and in come the police to start issuing citations.

My guess is that the enforcement is arbitrary, too.

There should be a point system for the bars. For each ticket the cops write to these kids, the establishment gets a point. X number of points in a month, and the bar is shut down for a week. Consecutive months in violation and the bar is down for two weeks, and so on. How long would it take for that ordinance to be stricken?

On a lighter note, was he on his moped at the time? Who knows, maybe his cable went out, and he was just down there watching the ball game.

You're forgetting that IC cops looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove busting Iowa athletes.

I don't agree with the cops even 1%, but if you know they're going to target your players it would behoove Ferentz to just go full Tom Brands and require all of them to be home by 10 and not even set foot downtown.

How times have changed.

It wouldn't get stricken but there'd be a door man at every bar.
