Two stats that just blow my mind......

In their 12 years at Iowa, this coaching staff is 9-49 in games in which it was tied or trailed entering the 4th quarter. That is a winning % of 16%. In fact, last year was such an anomoly that it accounted for almost 50% of the win total that this staff has in 12 years when trailing or tied after 3 quarters (4 wins out of 9).

On the flip side, this staff is 79-10 when leading after 3 quarters. That is a winning % of 89%. This year was the anomoly on the opposite side. 40% of the 4th quarter leads given up in this staff's 12 years happened just this year.

What does it all mean? Heck, I don't know. I just find both of those stats to be somewhat amazing.

That is amazing, but I think you have to throw out the first two years to have an accurate reflection of the staff.

Another interesting stat is that we have started on offense in 10 of the 11 games this year. Of those 10 games where we start on offense we have scored a TD only 30% of the time. We scored TDs against E Ill (which really shouldn't count), ISU and MSU. We score on our opening drive 50% of the time (3 TDs and 2 FGs).

I haven't been able to go back and look at the previous years #s yet but I've heard that the number of times we score any points on our opening drive when starting the game on offense drops to just below 35% (it is 50% of the time this year).

Even more interesting is that when we don't score at all on our opening drive (5 times out of the 10 games that we have started with the ball to begin the game), our opponents have scored 3 TDs (60%). The only two teams that haven't scored on us in this situation are Ball St who didn't score a point the entire game and OSU. If you remove Ball St from the picture, our opponents score a TD on us 80% of the time.

Why this coaching staff continues to take the ball when winning the coin flip is beyond comprehension. I know we don't win every coin flip but we've won our fair share this year.

is if you compare them to college FB as a whole. My guess is no one has a very good record when trailing going into the fourth quarter. When we played Northwestern, it was mentioned that Northwestern had led in the second half of their last 26 games, yet their record in that timeframe was worse than Iowa's.
