Two Hawkeye Portal Targets Pick Other Big Ten Schools

I really wish some folks wouldn't over react to this sort of thing. But I'm sure they'll be some that do. Ben has a tough sell to be making. I'm not expecting any miracles yr 1 I'm just not. Now if some magic donor plopped an extra couple million to the NIL pot then I'd say game on. But we all know what the situation is. He's gonna have to do it the old fashioned hard way for awhile. He's gonna have to turn more water into wine and hope he can out coach some teams for some Ws next yr. Recruiting and the following couple yrs are gonna really be interesting

Good summation of the situation.
 
My take is that the NIL bucks are still out there and guys can get good paydays. One that gets thinned out we will be more of a players.

I'm sure the staff is working really hard, watching lots of film looking for those diamonds in the rough. They are out there.
 
I don’t stress about these things at all right now. I am fully confident in BMC until he gives me reasons not to.

The roster will be filled and the 25-26 season will follow. I am REALLY looking forward to it and genuinely optimistic for the first time in a long while.

I was optimistic in the previous 4-5 years, but Fran’s track record conditioned me to expect a let down. This feels different, and I love it.
 
Not an overreaction by any means. It is what it is. These were two guys higher up on the list. Definitely isn’t ideal to have both pick other Big Ten schools

Nobody is more frustrated then Ben. He's had to be going nonstop trying to evaluate kids that are in the portal. Navigate how to communicate to their representation and try and sell what he can do for them while offering less $. At the same time his coaching staff isn't even complete yet. Or at least they all haven't been announced yet if it is.

This yr is going to be largely about culture setting and relationship building. He's going to want to establish relationships with Iowa HS coaches and try locking down the state so he can hopefully keep what instate players home going forward. That Storm Lake kid Jadyn Coon for starters. (I believe Gatens was his main recruiter for us so not keeping him on board for that sort of reason alone I think hurts)

And then just integrating himself into the D1 world of recruiting/transfer portaling as a whole. Hard to say how much of that he's up to speed on having not been in D1 at all yet. He's going to need some grace for awhile. How much is fair I don't know. If in 2-3 yrs things are bad I'm sure folks will have pitchforks out. Everyone expects quick fixes. I'm not so sure just how realistic that sort of thing is. Yes you can flip rosters easier/quicker now. But that doesn't mean it's always gonna be for the best

I don't know how high of a ceiling that kid has but it'd sure be nice to land him for no other reason then he's 6'6 and athletic. I want to say Ben had been trying to recruit him before this season shortly after he'd taken the Drake job too but I can't remember where I'd read that.
