Good article today by Tyler Tachman on the Iowa background of Indiana Pacers GM Chad Buchanan.
Got me wondering what was up with his son, Trey, who was a walk-on at Iowa last year under Fran. I always figured Trey got the walk-on because of Fran's ties to Indiana, Butler or something along those lines. Turns out Chad's ties to the Hawkeyes go much deeper. Chad played basketball at Simpson, hung around there for a while then got hired by Mr. Davis as an a graduate assistant. He credits that experience as important in his journey as Mr. Davis allowed him to be invovled in all aspects of the program, a great learning experience.
The article also says that when Chad was at Simpson, which he went back to after Mr. Davis moved on, he was involved with recruiting and was recruiting a high schooler who played harder in practice than he did in games. Didn't get him but his name was Ben McCollum. So, there is a tie there.
I hadn't heard Trey's name at all this off-season so went looking. He entered the transfer portal after Fran left but left it open that he might return to Iowa. But there is nothing on him after that. Anybody know where he ended up? I do remember Payton Sandfort saying he didn't know how we got Trey as a walk-on, he was a good hooper.
Having the son of the Indiana Pacers GM on your roster doesn't seem like a bad thing to me.
