Trevor Mbakwe Gets a Sixth Season

I read recently that Minnesota had already used all 13 scholarships next year. They'll have to free one up for Mbakwe. They would need to free another for the transfer from Arizona State.

This is a big reason why the NCAA is so f'ed up. Dude gets suspended for an entire year because of a peding assault investigation and still gets an extra year.

Meanwhile, a lot of guys who missed a good chunk of playing time as a result of injuries throughout their careers get shown the door after their 5th year and they NCAA denies their application for a 6th year. Didnt this happen to Lee Gray back in 2004-2005 for the Hawks?

Pierre Pierce was suspended an entire season for a legal violation and was allowed to redshirt. I lost faith in the NCAA long ago.

I dont think thats an NCAA decision. All student-athletes have 5 years to play 4. That was an Alford decision, and he felt a lot of backlash for it.

This would be like Pierce redshirting the year he was suspended and then he tears his knee up 7-8 games into his senior year (5th year on campus). He then asks the NCAA for a 6th year of eligiability and they give it to him.

Jared Reiner couldnt get a 5th year, and he graduated in four.

Another reason this ticks me off is I think Minnesota was going to be pretty good without Mbakwe next year. With him they may be Top 3 in the B1G.

Jared Reiner couldnt get a 5th year, and he graduated in four.

Reiner played in 45-percent of the Hawkeyes' games that season, well above the 20-percent threshold set by the NCAA.

Reiner sought an exemption on the grounds his injury was misdiagnosed. He complained of foot pain in early December and underwent medical tests, but the stress fracture was not discovered by doctors until January.

Note that the threshold was increased to 30-percent in 2007.

There was no way Reiner was going to get an extra year.

completely BS ruling unless he was hurt during his 3rd year out of high school (the one after his juco season)

Did Iowa try to get Cole another year? For some reason I think the NCAA didn't approve it.

Sure looked like MN got better when Sampson went to the bench with his "injury".

Iowa didn't even try with Cole. Jarryd played in thirteen games as a freshman, well over the thirty-percent threshold. Even if Iowa would have played forty-games Cole would not have qualified.

tourney/exempt games do not count towards the team total when calculating the participation percentage

Mbakwe's return makes a dangerous Minny team even tougher next year.

They have really come together in the NIT,with Andre Hollins, frosh pg, emerging bigtime. Rod Williams is also playing great.
If they do find a way to get Lockett on the roster...they could challenge for the top tier in the league.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. One of their key players will end up not playing. Tubby seems to be jinxed up there.

Word up here is that Tubby may not be the coach next year. It seems to get brought up every year around this time. If he were to seek out another job the University would have no objections to him leaving.

Most people want him gone up here, they just dont want to have to pay the buyout.
