It sounds like Ben Jacobson, who is in high demand after a historic season at UNI, just inked a 10 year deal after winning one game in the NCAA tourney this year. I loved watching UNI play this year, but it is too easy for an athletic director to get carried away and offer a lifetime deal after one great season. Jacobson had the benefit of having a 2nd team all American on his roster....it is HIGHLY unlikely that such a talent will ever play for UNI again under Ben's watch. The stars were aligned for UNI this year just as they were aligned the year Iowa was lucky enough to be matched up against an unranked opponent in the Orange Bowl...leading to Ferentz signing what is now thought of as the worst contract in college football.
I will continue to root for UNI, but I would think they would have learned a lesson from the Ferentz contract. A coach has much less incentive to work his butt off when he has a guaranteed lifetime contract. A hard working up and comer can quickly become a fat cat. When Iowa won the Orange Bowl, Ferentz was thought of as a top 5 coach nationwide just as Jacobson is now. We will see if the same can be said 6 years from now.
