Tread Lightly, UNI: 10 Yr Unbreakable Contracts Are a Mistake

It sounds like Ben Jacobson, who is in high demand after a historic season at UNI, just inked a 10 year deal after winning one game in the NCAA tourney this year. I loved watching UNI play this year, but it is too easy for an athletic director to get carried away and offer a lifetime deal after one great season. Jacobson had the benefit of having a 2nd team all American on his roster....it is HIGHLY unlikely that such a talent will ever play for UNI again under Ben's watch. The stars were aligned for UNI this year just as they were aligned the year Iowa was lucky enough to be matched up against an unranked opponent in the Orange Bowl...leading to Ferentz signing what is now thought of as the worst contract in college football.

I will continue to root for UNI, but I would think they would have learned a lesson from the Ferentz contract. A coach has much less incentive to work his butt off when he has a guaranteed lifetime contract. A hard working up and comer can quickly become a fat cat. When Iowa won the Orange Bowl, Ferentz was thought of as a top 5 coach nationwide just as Jacobson is now. We will see if the same can be said 6 years from now.

It was bad enough that Iowa learned the hard way with the KF contract. ISU didn't learn from Iowa and gave Rhoads a huge contract that is paying off very well for them and now UNI is going to give Jcobson a ten year deal for the 2-3 NCAA appearances he'll give them. Maybe it's a state of Iowa thing.

For someone who is supposedly a lawyer you sure don't know your facts at all. Georgia Tech was ranked 9th in the AP poll, 10th in the coaches poll, and ninth in the BCS pollwhen we played them in the Orange Bowl. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of a good Ferentz bashing.

The team they played was losing their coach to the pros, and at the time I thought Iowa got them at the right time.

Where does this crap come from? The Ramblin' Wreck wasn't losing their coach to the pros! Paul Johnson has been the Georgia Tech coach since '08. He started at Georgia Tech the season before they played the Hawks

Keep in mind, Ben is worth no less than double what they are paying him. Probably triple. With that said, they are getting a steal. Even if he fails from here on out, which he will not, he has earned the money.

Thing is, if Greg Marshall leaves Wichita St., the MVC will lose more prestige because you'd have to think the Shockers take a step back. This coming off of the heels of Creighton leaving makes the MVC reall even more of a small-time conference which probably ensures it will get only one bid to the NCAAs each year. Not sure Ben shouldn't have looked elsewhere but then if he's really happy in Cedar Falls, that's worth something too.

The only reason we beat GT is because their 3 best players were ineligible for the game.
