Thought we'd be higher than 9. From article:

9. Iowa
The Hawkeyes weren’t expected to win the Big Ten, but it’s also hard to give a pass for finishing 4-8 in a down year in the conference. The Hawkeyes struggled to transition to new offensive coordinator Greg Davis, as quarterback James Vandenberg threw only seven touchdown passes. Injuries hampered the running backs once again, while the defense finished eighth in the Big Ten in yards allowed. Iowa scored a one-point win over Northern Illinois and beat Michigan State in overtime. However, there were plenty of lowlights on the schedule, as the Hawkeyes lost to Central Michigan and Indiana. Kirk Ferentz has a huge contract, so he’s really in no danger of losing his job. However, Iowa cannot afford to finish 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Big Ten next season.

I don't get mad but it is the truth, and the truth hurts.

What really annoys me if the people who have no idea what they are talking about and say that he is on the hot seat and he will be fired if he has another bad season. They clearly aren't looking into the situation at all, they just look at records and say "on hot seat" or "he can't have another season like last season". He can have 3 or more seasons until the major donors start getting upset and start forking over the big bucks to get him out.

The only thing that Iowa can afford less than KF's buyout is another 4-8 season. I am fairly certain that if that happens again next year that Kirk will not coach in 2014.

Top Ten! YES!!!!!!!!!!

This isn't the top ten Iowa wasn't to be associated with but then again most fans should have seen this coming. At least you know how to see the positive in things unlike most around here! I for one am proud of you!

In all seriousness how did they miss Michigan State, they were almost unanimously picked to win the B1G this past off-season and they go 6-6. While Iowa is 4-8 when they were projected by most "experts" to go 7-5 or 6-6. List doesn't count, revote, re-do or whatever I call shenanigans!

yeah, we had a stinker of a season, but not top 10 worthy. there were some real disappointments this year, like MSU esp. now, 2010 was a gigantic disappointment, for sure.

Iowa will beat all but one of the following... Northern Ill, Missouri whatever, Iowa State, Michigan whatever, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, Michigan St., and lose three of four to Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan.

Over the last three years of disappointment with this program and the corresponding debate over Ferentz there is wing of the message board fan base that contends while yes its fair to debate the state of said program the amount of money Ferentz makes is irrelevant to that debate. That sentiment is straight BS as that highlighted comment shows Kurt's pay gives him a level of job security no coach deserves to have. And said level of job security is all the more absurd every year the downward slide of this program continues to get worse.

I don't care how much money he makes, I only care that this program is in bad shape with little hope as the last 3 seasons were all disappointing and each one after looked worse than the one before. That leaves little to no hope that this ship is going to be turned around.

It isn't his pay, it is his buyout within his contract, which they are related but not absolute. KF has to have the best agent and the best legal team who writes up his contracts.

Not all contracts/buyouts have the same terms, Ferentz got too long of contract extension with too high of buyout % of his current salary. Barta wanted to keep Ferentz and Ferentz wanted job security and they both got what they wanted. It can be debated why Barta wanted to lock down Ferentz besides his personal friendship with Ferentz as the larger donors had to have something to do with it. Barta didn't just do this on his own with no one backing him.

IMO the number one reason Barta gave Kurt that contract was that two years prior he had made the worst hire in the U of I history (Lickliter) and his was desperately reaching to get back the lost positive sentiment from the fan base and donors.
