Dude is 6-0 and still complaining. This is how the NBA is played and I think it makes the game a lot smoother.

That is precisely what I don't want to see, an NBA style of game. Keep the NBA in the NBA, I have no issues with physical play and didn't have any issues with it in the NBA before all the rules changes.

What the problem is and will continue to be is inconsistent officiating. I watched the UConn/Ind game and UNC/Lou game today and the emphasis on the rules was simply not there and no matter how many rules are put in place, if they officials refuse to call the game to the rules, that is the root cause of the issue.

The solution, conferences weed them out and the NCAA needs to implement a real grading system for the officials.

This is my favorite part of the interview:

Michigan State’s starting point guard, Keith Appling, finished the night with 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting. He took over down the stretch, hitting big shot after big shot as he got into the paint seemingly at will. Here’s the thing: that was by design. “I told Keith at the end, if he takes a jump shot I’ll kill him,” Izzo said. “I just want him to drive in there and get fouled.”

God bless him.....

I agree. Holding the officials accountable for how they call games is the only way change will happen.

The game became way too physical over the last 10-15 years. It was never acceptable to 2 hand check, arm bar, grab and hold, etc. before that. Teams slowly conditioned refs to allow rougher play, and now they are taking it back 2 steps. I don't understand why people want to watch a wrestling match instead of a BB game. Watching 52-49 games is the worst kind of torture.

Let me clarify because I think you are calling me out a bit here. The issue is and has never been a rules issue. It is the fact that the officials don't call the game as intended, so now the brilliance of the rules committee makes changes so a chimp can call the game.

There is no need to change the rules if the officials would be consistent and call the game, but also when you have conferences that continue to hire officials like the idiots that blew the Big East game a few years ago, they contribute to the problem.

The NCAA in all its infinite wisdom should have came up with a system to educate and discipline officials for sucking, but they have left it up to the conferences to police them, yeah that has worked out so well. The officials truly have zero accountability because they will go work for another conference. Do you think they honestly care if they don't do NCAA tournament games? They get paid for calling the games during the regular season like crap and still officiate, so they are never impacting for being awful.

I actually wasn't calling you out, you make a good point here. I just meant the game was never meant to be as physical as it had become over the last 10-15 years.

I agree with you and I think there are a few reasons for it.
1. No governing body over the officials, free reign to do a bad job and still find work wherever they want.
2. The athletes have changed; more and more ready to play big time ball as freshmen.
3. Coaches do get preferential treatment when it comes to officials; they will never admit, but it happens and I think it is at its worst since I have been watching college basketball.
4. Not enough new blood for officials, guys like Valentine and Burr should not be on the floor and it shows. The inconsistencies I think spawn from this as they just simply cannot keep up with the game today.
5. Who wants to be an official today? That is part of the problem, fans and parents are out of control on the HS and lower levels on what they can get away with in regards to officials and coaches treatment is amazing.

If Michigan State plays how they played in previous years, their entire team will foul out.

I hope he doesn't continue to get the Izzo treatment in B1G play...

Straight up gamesmanship by Izzo, pure and simple. He'll continue whining and planting seeds in the heads of Jim Delany, Rick Boyages and the director of officiating to the point that by the time January rolls around B1G games will be officiated pretty much as they've always been -- grabbing, hand-checking, defenders' forearms in the sides and backs of opponents is allowed by any team wearing green.

you and i are thinking a lot alike lately. hummmmm

One of the things that used to drive me nuts, is teams making 10-15 pt runs in the last 4 min of the game, as they would ratchet up the D, and just basically hack and foul. It would seem like the refs would let 1/2 of it go, and all of a sudden the team is back in the game and can win.

Back to all my points...call the game as intended and grade the officials.

I usually have respect for Izzo, but to me, this is the same thing as Urban Meyer complaining about how unfair the BCS system is. Basketball is, and should be, a non contact sport. Essentially, what Izzo is complaining about is games being officiated the correct way. He understands that he could have some serious problems in the BIG if his team isn't allowed to mug people like they've done for years. Izzo is lobbying for a return to swallowing the whistle by the BIG refs. Iowa, for example, has a boat load more players than MSU does that can dribble drive and get to the rim and get fouled. He's using a game where his player had success getting to the lane to make it sound like he isn't ********. When a person says: "I'm not..." then that is exactly what they wind up doing. Izzo's no fool, he knows he could be in trouble in the BIG.

Agreed. The problem as I see it, is the combination of the blocking fouls and hand checking. Its making it ridiculously easy for guards to drive to the basket. They should ease up on the charge/blocking calls. Make the guards have to create in the lane instead of bailing them out with all the foul calls.
I hate the hand checking and arm bars, so its nice to see that crap come to an end.

The truth is, Izzo has the refs working for him and has allowed his team to play rougher each year. He'd be an idiot if he didnt cry about the changes. It's a threat to his status and he knows it. I hope the refs keep on it. I'd love to see what happens to his teams once the field is leveled.

If you're expecting MSU to take a big step back (and certainly one that is anything more than temporary) because they won't be able to mug people, you're going to wind up disappointed. With the kind of athletes he can get to East Lansing, the ability to play true defense isn't the issue. It's that they can get away without it. MSU was an elite program long before Izzo took over and, while that doesn't take anything away from what he's accomplished, nothing as small as this rule change is going to change that.

You are delusional. Do you honestly think that refs have some grand conspiracy to reward Izzo and punish the hawks? This story is as old as time itself. When any team loses it's fan base always says "the refs screwed us!"

Izzo is a good coach and he's got good players, that's usually why he wins. Same for Thad Matta, beilein and Bo Ryan etc

Yes MSU is physical but they'll have to dial back that physicality just like every other team in the country or they'll be in foul trouble.

You're the delusional one if you think Michigan State won't get away with the same old mugging style of play once the conference schedule gets underway. As I posted, Izzo already is sending a message about what he expects from the referees who do BoneG games.
