I noticed that this year, with the addition of the 3 additional teams, the Thursday/Friday games of the tournament are now called the "2nd round".

I know one of the criticisms of Tom Davis was he could rarely get Iowa past the 2nd round of the tourney. I bet Davis wishes the NCAA had gone to this expanded field when he was still Iowa's coach. With the new format and naming convention, he would have more than likely gotten Iowa past the second round a few more times and silenced some of his critics.

i noticed the same thing and wondered what the hell they were talking about. i think i saw today's game being referred to as '3rd round'.

The play-ins shouldn't be called the first round, it's a preliminary round. A true round has all teams competing. The OP needs to lay off of Mr. Davis.

Yeah, the Tom Davis stuff is over the top..this year's "Second round" is really the first round. No coach is gonna be given props for losing their first game because it's technically called the second round.

I think that's silly that they do that..those first games that nobody cares about should be play in games....and that's if they are allowed to happen at all.

In a tournament like this, a true "round" means that the number of teams competing in the next "round" is smaller than the number that competed in the previous one.

Going from 8 to 64. Yeah, the numbers don't add up. Eight teams in this tourney does NOT constitute a round, unless it is preceded by a round of 16. Period.

I'm going to guess the reason they are calling it the 1st round is you may see them go to 96 teams in the years to come. The 1st round will be come the 64 lowest seated teams playing Tuesday and Wednesday for the right to play on Thursday and Friday. Can you say MO Money MO Money!!!!.

Up until this year, didn't they call the play-in game the "opening round" and then the first round was still the "first round"?

Tom Davis was an excellent coach and a fine recruiter (especially when it came to recognizing big men that he could develop). Sure he had a few missteps (e.g. giving a scholarship to a guy that ended up playing for Clarke College), but overall he was good.

If I remember correctly, Tom Davis made it past the first round most of the time so the original post in inaccurate!
