Tom Davis on Roy Marble

I always thought when RM arrived at Iowa he was overhyped, overrated, but by the time he left I think he was underrated and wasn't appreciated enough. When he left Iowa he had a decent jump shot. Back then every 6'5 black dude with athleticism was compared to Jordan and it created unrealistic expectations which I kinda got sucked into. If the off the court issues didn't derail him I really think he would have had least at minimum a decent NBA career.

Read what he says about him - his willingness to be a team player, coachable, etc. There are many guys out there, per what Coach Davis is saying, that have talent, but don't have a lot of the other necessities to make them part of a great team, or a team leader. Great words from Coach Davis about Roy Marble.

It is awesome to read about two of my favorite coaches having good word about Roy, I started to get lumps in my throat. Thanks for sharing that.

That 89 team was my first real taste of watching Iowa basketball as a kid. I grew up with BJ as my all time favorite but Marble just was the man. He could run the floor and had no fear going to the hoop against the bigger guys. The way Marble was always a Hawk and how he was around the program the last few years I'm sure touched a lot of the recent players. I know White enjoyed his company and spoke extremely lovingly of getting to be around him during Devins time with the team. I'm sure a lot of the other guys did too. He seemed like an unofficial "uncle" to the team for the lack of a better term. He'll be missed by many... I hope Devin knows that his Hawkeye family is here for him and always will.
