Tom Brady v. Nathan Stanley

Mr. Brady is unquestionably one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game. We can quibble over the absolute best and we know the names for discussion, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Chuck Long, Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers and his brother Matt, John Elway, et al, but clearly Mr. Brady is a top 10 QB of all time. So let's look at these two stat lines in first starts against Ohio State:

Stat line #1: 16-31, 5 TDs, 0 INTS

Stat line #2: 31-56, 1 TD, 2 INTS

You as a discerning Iowa fan probably think that an all-time great who is a lock for the NFL hall of fame put up that 5TD and 0 INT performance in his first start against Ohio State, right? Well sit down.

It wasn't Mr. All World Tom Brady who put up those numbers. He managed a measly 1 TD and threw 2 INTS in his first start against OSU. The guy who put up those gaudy numbers was actually a lightly recruited gunslinger out of Menomonie, Wisconsin by the name of Nathan Stanley who plays for Iowa. Now I don't want to guarantee that Mr. Stanley will be in the NFL hall of fame, but based on that stat line and the dearth of pro style QBs in college, particularly those who can hang in the pocket without getting happy feet, I think the odds of Mr. Stanley being a first rounder and hall of fame hopeful are pretty high.

Chuck Long lol
Long was plagued by 2 things. 1) being drafted by the Detroit Lions. 2) Lions' management inability to sign him to the deal he was worth thereby causing him to miss training camp. Had Long slid two more slots in that draft and gone to the Vikings, he would have been packaged in the Herschel Walker trade and been the Cowboys dynasty QB rather than Troy Aikman.

Ok4p, the incredible thing is that Stanley has throw 5 td passes in a single game, twice, already. That's twice in 9 starts. I think I know why you included Chuck Long. NS definitely will start drawing comparisons to Chuck. Chuck is hands down Iowa's best ever.

The really amazing thing about it is that we lost a QB who is starting in the NFL as a rookie and Stanley has been more than an adequate replacement thus far. Not many teams lose a rookie starter to the draft and keep firing. Think of the caliber of guys who start as rookies. Peyton Manning (I think Tee Martin won a title after Peyton left), Andrew Luck, Vince Young (replaced by NFL stud Colt McCoy who also got them to title game), Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf. Some of these teams just completely implode when the star QB graduates - I mean how bad did Auburn get when Cam went to the NFL.

Different players at different times on different teams. Might as well compare someone from 1950 to someone today.
