Today's Peter King column: Top 5 College Coaching Cand. for NFL - Ferentz #4

I think these sound like the top five college coaching candidates for NFL head coaching jobs, per chats with front office people in the last two weeks (in order):
1. Chip Kelly, Oregon
2. David Shaw, Stanford
3. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame
4. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa (even coming off the bad season at Iowa, he's well-respected in the NFL)
5. Doug Marrone, Syracuse.

So what you are saying is there is a chance..

Which NFL jobs are open (or going to be open)?
I'd guess Cleveland, Philly, KC, and San Diego for sure. Maybe Dallas, Oakland, and Warshington.
I can't imagine that Pioli would be retained by KC ownership, and even if he was, replacing Crennel with Ferrets would not fly.

Don't get your hopes up, fellers.

It seems ridiculous to me.

What do these people know that we do not? As Iowa fans, we watch every play, every snap, watch each second tick off the clock and analyze/critique/criticize every play call. There is a consensus that Ferentz is grossly under-performing on the coaching sidelines. So what in the heck do these "experts" see in him that we don't?

and why isn't Nick Saban on that list?

Do you think Cleveland would go for him though? I don't see him going to KC since as you said Pioli will be canned. Or even Oakland or Philly, but both of those places are going to be looking for the big name hire.

Not the right time for him to stroll off. The program has lost its momentum. Not now. He needs to crank this thing up, and bring on a successor.

Just curious how many on that list are with the same NFL Agent. Sometimes those lists are nothing more than favors for an agent - agents are the powerful and invisible hand of the market

It must be a fraternity and Nicky did not make it thru hell week or something....that is all I can think of...

Norv Turner. End of debate

and why isn't Nick Saban on that list? JM: Because he left and failed in the NFL as an HC and is on top of the world in college

Kurt Ferrets is not going anywhere. He brought Brian back to put him in the OC slot, which I predict he'll do (or try to do) next year. Get a few years under Brian's belt, position him as a candidate for a HC slot, either taking over when the old man retires or at some other school.

Who's going to stop him?

Personally I think the Not For Long is a bad fit for him. Much much much tooo much a business, too fast, and very much requires skill in the two minute game and clock mgmt. it will be a very short stay for him if he does go IMO

Ferentz and Davis a package deal? Having them in Dallas that would be hilarious. You'd be able to hear the entire state of Texas face palming simultaneously.

Ferentz and Davis meet with Romo: "OK Tony, I know you like throwing to Witten, but that's gonna stop. You need to stop showing off by chucking the ball down to Dez and Austin for big gains. Keep it simple and hopefully the opponent messes up. If you stick to the game plan, we'll reward you by letting you try a flea flicker in week 4. If that doesn't work, then oh well, we're just not good enough and that's football....snort, cough, fart." "Greg, do you have anything to add?" "No sir...thanks for the opportunity sir!"

I wasn't able to watch the Nebby game. Watching the replay on btn now. Kurtis Ferrets really has absolutely no clue what he's doing anymore. No nfl team will ever want him. We are stuck woth this senile old bastard for a couple more years.

But he would have more time with the team to work on the two minute drill and he would always have a decent QB. I think the guy could do fine in the NFL and he wouldn't be distracted by recruiting and the weekly DUIs and PAULAs. Plus, I think he would be much better suited to a world where he could select his players through a draft and free agency than being relegated to taking the rare good players who want to play in Iowa City. His demeanor would also resonate better with NFL players than it does in the college game.

Basically, if I were GarBar, I would be pretty worried about this development and offer an extension with the caveat that I (OK4P) get to draft the contract and it is take it or leave it.

KF isn't walking away from Iowa to the NFL, that is crazy talk. So he is going to walk away from his retirement money that he negotiated for with Gary Barta in 2009. YEAH RIGHT!!! KF is paid NFL MONEY to coach at Iowa and has SECURITY, what coach walks from that???

The NFL average salary for a coach is 3.25 Million.. Enough said..

Plus he has a fawning Iowa sports media that is afraid to ask him the tough question for fear of getting cut out. He could not get away with his non-responsive responses in a larger market.

As much as I would like it to happen, there is no way Kirk leaves for the NFL. I know it, most of you know it, and maybe he even knows it too, that he would get absolutely tore up in the NFL. The NFL has changed quite a bit since Kirk was last in it, and he doesn't even adapt to the league that he's currently coaching in! What makes you think he could adapt to be successful in the NFL?

Kurt's got a lot of friends in the NFL, nice of them to try to get him another pay bump.

I would actually enjoy watching him try to go to the NFL, good luck to any owner trying to sell their fanbase on hiring a coach who went 4-8 in college last year. Plus Kurt is good at developing players over 4-5 years, he is not a good game coach, he would be a disaster as an NFL head coach.
