Time to name one interim D-Coordinator.

People are going to hate me for this, but Norm had his foot amputated a couple of weeks ago. It is just not that realistic to think he is going to be on the sidelines any time this season. Holding out hope that he is and keeping this co-coordinators thing between Wilson and Parker is hurting the team on both defense and special teams.

Time to just name one of these guys interim D-coordinator and allow someone to have the authority to make the calls and adjustments. If Norm gets well enough to coach this year, which is really hard to believe as he should have to go through about 6 months to learn to use a prosthetic, then make a change.

You are right my friend. Hard to say, but he is back or he is not. I love Parker, love him. But sentimentaliy can be a weakness. Ask Herbstreit. Corso is loved, and you know a tv metaphor is only a tv metaphor, but why not. Parker's loss is huge. But, in sum, this season's disappointment comes down to Ferentz. You see my name is MissouriHerk, so you know I'm from Missouri. I just saw Missouri, a program no where near as developed as Iowa, win over a #1 program. I grew up a Missouri fan, but easily became a rabid, rabid Iowa fan in 1997. Ferentz is a great coach, like Norm Stewart was to Mo Basketball, but not a champion. Champions take risks. Rose Bowl coaches go for it late, and teach their quarterbacks to spike the ball when needed.

I really don't think this game came down to whether Norm was on the sidelines or not. Wisconsin exposed weaknesses at middle linebacker and defensive backfield and saw that we don't cover fake punts particularly well. They also have some pretty big guys on the O line who managed to throw our pretty good DL around at the end of the game.

It isn't about Norm not being there. It is about one coach having responsibilities as co-d-coordinator, linebackers, and ST. Do you think if one of those responsibilities was taken away, he might have been able to focus more on figuring out the best way to defend that punt formation? Also, if one guy is responsible for calling the D - don't you think he might be able to match what the offense figures out? Too many cooks in the kitchen is not a good thing. Name a head chef and let the chips fall where they may.

I have to agree and think Kirk has made a mistake here which has started to show up on the field. This defense right now has issues and we need one guy in charge of it. If Norm retires after the season things could get interesting.

I would agree Norm is solid but we are not making any second half adjustments which has been something we always have done we got worse in the 2nd half. Our defense has needed two drives so far this season and we are 0-2 can we try putting pressure on the qb with a blitz or something from time to time instead of just sitting back and getting picked apart.

Clayborn and his defensive mates found themselves in the position of explaining it away Saturday.

“It feels so weird,†Clayborn said. “The defense didn’t step up when we needed it, but that’s kind of the way it’s been going this year.

“We’re missing something. We’ve got to find it.â€

— Marc Morehouse

What is missing is; two NFL drafted LB's(Angerer and Edds) and one NFL drafted DB(Spivey). Players make plays, the line is doing what is supposed to in the Iowa defensive scheme, the back seven is not always making the plays available to be made. That is what the defense needs, not an interim coordinator.

You simply make one special teams play that was not made and you win the game.

I agree Wisconsin exposed some weaknesses, but you just can't sit in base defense all game and let the opponent dictate what happens. All Wisconsind did on those 3rd and mediums is spread out and throw the crossing route to whomever the linebacker was covering. I have to relook at the tape, but it seams to me at somepoint you need to bring a safety down (and replace him with Castillo or Bernstine maybe) and play 1 free safety and one middle linebacker to stop that underneath crossing route. Iowa played 2 safeties the entire time against 4 and 5 wide sets against a team that never throws deep and doesn't even have a touchdown from one of its wideouts. On the five wide sets there were litterally no middle linebackers. It all goes back to the theme of the day: refusal to take risks and play aggressive.

Norm isn't coming back...period. Iowa is going to be looking for a new defensive coordinator next season. Let's hope to heck he doesn't promote from within...but brings in an aggressive coach with an attacking defense.

Losing a limb to diabetes is SERIOUS stuff. He will be lucky to be alive next season, much less coaching.

Ron Santo is missing both legs and is still alive and kicking. I don't think losing a foot is the same as staying alive.

Got to give some credit to Bucky's O-line. The Iowa D-line was gassed on Wiscy's last drive. Even AC had his hands on his knees between plays.

Let's not be too hard on the defense overall fellas.

C'mon now....Norm has carried KoK for years....and think no further back than last season when the D carried Stanzi game after game.

But for sure...our D met its match yesterday, no doubt, in a one game scenerio.

So much so in fact, when Wisky had a 1st down on our 30 with 3:30-something left, the smart play would have been to simply let them score on the next play so we could have gotten the ball back with 3+ mins left and drove in for the winning TD.

It was obvious to most people I think we weren't going to all-of-a-sudden stop them on that drive....not when they had two other 80-yard, multi-play drives to score earlier in the game.

I really hope Norm doesn't read these boards. What a horrible thing to say. I know several people who have lost limbs from diabetes & have lived many years after. Good years too. I admire Kirk for his loyalty to his coaches and wouldn't want it any other way. Winning isn't everything!

This should have been done a long time ago. It's obvious teams are exploiting our defense without Norm in charge.

Guys, if we were to name an interim D-Coordinator it wouldn't change a damn thing. That would be a northing more than a token title and it wouldn't change anything in the way this team prepares or is run.

If it makes you feel better maybe we can all agree to call Phil Parker "Awsome Temporary Defensive Coordinator Just Til Norm Gets Back"

It would make a difference. One person would have final say and responsibility. Remember, a camel is a horse designed by a committee.

But simply giving someone that title won't change the way we go about things. I'd guess if KF wanted a Interem DC he'd have named one.

Taking D-coordinator out of the hands of the special teams and linebacking coach would allow him 1/e more time to spend analyzing special teams and linebacking play. Our secondary is doing fine. Linebackers and special teams has been a MASH unit this year, so it makes sense to give the temp duties to Phil. Oh, and get KOK in the danged press box like every other team. D-coordinators can't see what play the offense is running by the way they are lined up, but O-coordinators can read a defense from the air and relay a checkdown to the field via headset. Also, the fewer people shouting timeout in stupid places on the sidelines the better.
