Time will tell if McCaffery is a great coach for Iowa, but I sure like what I am hearing and seeing...
But let's give credit where it is due... to Gary barta.
For everyone clamoring that he didn't know what he was doing, that a search committee was the quickest way to seal the fate of the basketball program, you got it wrong.
• He reached out to the proven crop of major program coaches, and could quickly see that their salary demands were nothing more than leverage grabs with their current schools.
• He was the one making the decision and used the search committee as a sounding board, not as a democratic body.
and most importantly...
• If the reports out of Dayton are true that Gregory was the first choice, Barta played it beautifully. If we had waited for Gregory, McCaffery would have been off the table as he likely would have taken one of his other job offers. Gregory then would have been able to make any salary demand he wanted because our second choice was no longer an option.
Barta didn't let anyone dictate the terms of his search to him. He didn't let any candidate have any negotiating power before they were hired.
Time will tell if Barta knows who to hire, but one thing is for sure, he knows how to hire the right way.
