Time to give Barta credit

Time will tell if McCaffery is a great coach for Iowa, but I sure like what I am hearing and seeing...

But let's give credit where it is due... to Gary barta.

For everyone clamoring that he didn't know what he was doing, that a search committee was the quickest way to seal the fate of the basketball program, you got it wrong.

• He reached out to the proven crop of major program coaches, and could quickly see that their salary demands were nothing more than leverage grabs with their current schools.

• He was the one making the decision and used the search committee as a sounding board, not as a democratic body.

and most importantly...

• If the reports out of Dayton are true that Gregory was the first choice, Barta played it beautifully. If we had waited for Gregory, McCaffery would have been off the table as he likely would have taken one of his other job offers. Gregory then would have been able to make any salary demand he wanted because our second choice was no longer an option.

Barta didn't let anyone dictate the terms of his search to him. He didn't let any candidate have any negotiating power before they were hired.

Time will tell if Barta knows who to hire, but one thing is for sure, he knows how to hire the right way.

What a difference a couple days makes! Sunday morning a lot of people were firing Barta, and now we want to give him a contract extension. I really hope Fran works. Its pretty obvious based on the optimism on the board right now that people desperately want this to work. I think it will

I agree...and I will probably write another 'Dear Gary' letter in response to the first one I wrote.

A non 'press conference splash' hire just stole the press conference, and he has a track record to boot.

The biggest thing for me is that Barta has made two huge decisions in the past two weeks, neither easy, both controversial, but both in the best interest of Iowa basketball

I'm not raging for a contract extension...

There were just a lot of people here claiming that Barta didn't know what he was doing, was incapable of a job at this level, angry about the search committee etc...

When it is so painfully obvious, he knows very well what he is doing.

Let's hope this coach works out for him and for HN!

Give hmi credit for what...another mid major hire...wow impressive...NOT

If you think that being from a mid major has anything to do with why Alford and Lickliter failed, then you're completely hopeless and have a real lack of understanding with what has transpired the past 10 years.

One of the common things I wrote during the search was something along the line of "Barta knows more than you, which is why he is doing the dearches. No one lets fans hire coaches because fans don't get it".

I have no real point here. I just feel like I haven't been giving myself enough credit lately.

The most important thing Gary did was to listen to some BB people before the fire and the hire, and he acted accordingly. He didn't do that last time around from what I gather.

I beg to differ, i feel like you have been giving yourself plenty of credit. :)

Your point is a good one - the fans dont really know what is going on at all, and that is one of the things that make all of the strong opinions during the coaching search either annoying or entertaining depending on your mood

How do you know that? Seems to me he used the same procedure as the 1st time using the search committee, etc.

I need to give you credit too. On Sunday when everyone was freaking out, you were smart enough to agree with everything I said :).
